'International draw Muhammad day' was news, when thousands upon thousands protested by indulging their freedom of expression. This is a single dunce who seems to have far more koran's than I'd expect of him. Who's supplying them? If I were to burn one I'd have to go and buy it first. Who'd be mug enough to do that?

Koran-burning protests sweep Afghanistan

 

Thousands of protesters have held anti-American rallies in provinces across Afghanistan over plans by a US church to burn copies of the Koran.

 

Demonstrators burned a US flag and chanted "Death to Christians".

 

Three people were shot and wounded when private security guards opened fire on stone throwers outside a Nato base in Badakhshan province, police said.

 

President Hamid Karzai said the Florida church's plan - now on hold - had been an insult Islam's followers.

 

In Badakhshan's provincial capital Faizabad, 1,500 people poured on to the streets, the police chief told the BBC.

 

About 150 people took part in another protest in the city, throwing rocks and attempting to climb the walls of a Nato base. Private security guards opened fire wounding three, said the police chief.

 

Rallies were also held in Nimruz's provincial capital Zaranj; the province of Kunar, in Khas Kunar district; Nangarhar province, at the Khewa district; and the Tagab district of Parwan province, just north of Kabul.

 

'Insult to nations'

 

And demonstrations were reported on Friday in the northern provinces of Baghlan, Kundoz and Balkh. Afghanistan has 34 provinces.

 

There have been major demonstrations in Kabul, too, over the past week.

 

Witnesses said the protesters voiced anger that the US government had not banned the Koran-burning.

 

Terry Jones, pastor of the previously little-known Dove World Outreach Center in the US state of Florida, announced on Thursday that he was putting on hold his plan for an "International Burn a Koran Day".

 

In an Eid message, President Karzai said: "We have heard that in the US, a pastor has decided to insult Korans. Now although we have heard that they are not doing this, we tell them they should not even think of it."

 

"By burning the Koran they cannot harm it. The Koran is in the hearts and minds of one-and-a-half billion people. Insulting the Koran is an insult to nations."

 

The US military commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, warned earlier this week the stunt would endanger lives, while President Barack Obama called it a "recruitment bonanza" for al-Qaeda.

I can't be bothered to check the source for that bar chart either but I'd stake money on it being flawed regarding relating suicide to religious belief - there's a whole host of factors that could explain why atheists (mainly from developed countries) are recorded as committing suicide more than muslims (off the top of my head would be suicide is a modern 'illness', methodological problems in recording the data, stigma in muslim countries etc).

 

I'll be controversial here and say in general and in its current form, I find Islam to be the most offensive and dangerous religion. CLosely followed by christian nut jobs in the States.

I can't get it into my head how anyone can find writing a book like Satanic verses or burning a Koran particularly offensive. Same goes for cartoons of Mohammed, burning national flags, Jerry Springer the Opera, Southpark etc. Having said this the pastor wants shot to shit because of the predictable reaction his protest would cause. Three people dead now who wouldn't have beeen thanks to that cunt, and presumably a soldier with guilt problems in the future.
