Ooo, you have "Infinite Jest". I've been toying with that one for a while now. Is it worth the effort?

I read up to page 760(1) last year(2) and got sidetracked. If I want to get back into it, I'll have to start all over again for it to make any sense.

Tbh, a lot of it is a chore to get through, but you have to wade through it all, because some seemingly pointless little detail you may have missed - or forgotten because it's so bloody long-winded - will become important later in the story.

The whole book is an espièglerie(3). I found myself laughing, not at the story, but the farcical way it has you sifting through the notes at the back of book.

Half of the book is drivel which you end up trudging through to get to the good stuff. It's a lot of hard work for a little reward, which for a book about addiction, is probably appropriate.

Unless you're eidectic(4), i'd try to read the whole lot in big chunks over a short space of time. It's so complex, you'll end up re-reading stuff you've forgotten if you try to space it out too much.

For a translator, this is probably like nudie pics to Jimbo(5).

Notes and errata

1- When I looked at the book again, I realised that I hadn't finished the book, and the bookmark inside showed where I'd got up to.

2 - May 2004, when I broke my hand and spent a few weeks off work.

3 - espièglerie - A mischevious trick.

4 - Photographic memory, eidetic memory, or total recall, is the ability to recall images, sounds, or objects in memory with great accuracy and in seemingly unlimited volume.

5 - Legendary connoisseur of pornography/recipient of frequent stroker miles.

If someone can't stretch to a C I can't imagine they'll be soloing up and down the neck anytime soon.

I must point out that I was 10 at the time!

Oh aye. No shame in it. Most people struggle to start with. It was directed at Sammy. I don't think anyone should progress to lead till they've mastered their chords and scales.

My one bit of advice - It's a good idea to do 1 or 2 hours a night for the first month to really harden your fingertips ASAP. If you practice a couple of times a week it'll still be hurting 6 months down the line.

Suuuperb. I'll definitely check it out at some point, it sounds like the logical step up from the bicycle-with-stabilisers that was "A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius".

Just out of interest how hard is it to play guitar?

Been thinking about getting one sometime in the new year, finding my current setup a bit limited (1 keyboard synth and 1 rack synth). I fancy something different.

piece of piss

Beat me to it! Guitar is easy; it's for gays and lezzas

Leave the drums (and dancing) for real men ;)

I'm still scarred from a Year 6 music lesson whereby no matter how hard i tried, I could not stretch my fingers to play a C chord.

63611

I could never do an F or a G7 .. I can now but I try never to play those if I can help it, out of sheer hatred.

It's not too difficult but it does take a fair bit of practice/dedication if you don't have the natural ability (which I don't, and my dedication is usually lacking..)

Worth having a go though. ;)

Retard. ;)

I was helped by the fact that I'm left-handed, playing guitar right-handed, so the hand that does all the difficult stuff is my "trained" one. Made things a lot easier starting out and goes some way to explaining my incredible guitar-playing abilities.

I've got one of these:

Canadian made again, like the ones Sammy mentions above.  Nice guitars.

Bliddy left-handers :(

I've got a very old Spanish guitar that my mam bought years ago (in Spain funnily enough) Might be a bit far to go to buy one like...

62607

No, no, no. ;) I've got the right handed version, as despite being left-handed, I play the guitar right-handed. Musical genius tbh.

62610

I'm the same. Yet I'm a left-handed saxophonist (much to the annoyance of my ex) and a left-handed violinist (much to the annoyance of my tutor). Needless to say I gave them all up and stuck with the guitar. Well, I say stuck with it..... barely pick any of them up now much to the annoyance of Mrs Paws as she bought me one of them!

I have a Black and White Fender Strat (now used and abused to the point at which it needs new pickups, a rewire, new pot's and a refret). This was my second guitar after the cheap one I bought as my first. Now 12 yrs old.

Vantage Semi acoustic. Had never heard of them but played it in Sounds Live (Dean St IIRC) 10 years ago and it still sounds mint now. I can leave it for months and months without touching it and then pick it up and it sounds perfect elec or acoustic.

Les Paul Std in Vintage Sunburst. Pressie from Mrs Paws and my favourite. Just feckin' mint. Sounds class with my Marshall.
