Owen out again

MICHAEL Owen has been ruled out of Newcastle United's Carling Cup clash with Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night.

The Magpies' record signing has missed the recent Premiership defeats at Chelsea and Everton with a groin injury, and he will again be on the sidelines at the JJB Stadium.

Also absent is left-back Celestine Babayaro, who limped out of Sunday's 1-0 loss at Goodison Park. As a result, manager Graeme Souness recalls Robbie Elliott to the squad that will travel to the north west to face Paul Jewell's Latics, when a place in the last eight of the Carling Cup will be at stake.

Newcastle will be looking to avenge their 1-0 league loss at Wigan back in September, when skipper Alan Shearer saw an equalising 'goal' controversially chalked off.

United have named the following 18-man squad: Ameobi, Boumsong, Bowyer, Bramble, Brittain, Chopra, Clark, Elliott, Emre, Faye, Given, Harper, Luque, N'Zogbia, Parker, Ramage, Shearer, Solano

I'd rather us have Dr Stephen Hawking play up front instead of Shola !

He's far more mobile.

Well, I'm stupidly going down to Wigan to watch this shit. It sounds like it's going to be a resereve match. A bloke on the Legends last nigt had a good point like, the League Cup could be the difference between Souness keeping his job at the end of the season and getting the sack. We're not in Europe, it's going to be very difficult to qualify through the league imo, and the FA Cup is taken far more seriously by the big clubs. The League Cup is our only chance of winning anything this year imo.

If we're not going to risk Luque for the full game then we might as well give Chopra a run out.

Let's face it Shearer will be playing (which despite the fact that he's a shadow of his former self these days, he's still light years ahead of that donkey he played alongside on Sunday) and everyone with eyes can see he can't play with Shola so we might as well give Chopra a go.

At least he'll look interested.

Injured again, what a surprise.

So what should we have done? Looked into our crystal balls and see that he was going to get injured and therefore not bought him?

Of course, this would never have happened if SBR was still in charge ;)

No, but Owen has always been injury prone. So it is a bit worrying that we have solely to rely on this player and are lacking other options. This season: games with Owen = 13 pts., without Owen = 5 pts.

Don't get me wrong, I am excited to have Owen at Newcastle. Though, 16m was a very huge price to pay. I just hope that Owen does play often enough to repay this sum.

At the risk of taking a kicking, if Chopra was to be given a chance against Wigan I'd be playing Shola instead of Shearer.

Ow...

You're the one who appears to think the Robson could do no wrong and that we'd be better off if he hadn't been sack if I'm not mistaken??

Souness was NOT the right man to replace him, but that doesn't detract from the point that Robson had to go - tbh he should have been relieved of his duties 3 months before he actually was!

If SBR was still in charge, we would still have a player who played in 54 premiership games in 18 months, while still carrying a painful knee injury .....

Has since been accused by people inside the club of feigning injury and being a "cancer"

maybe he was, but he showed a lot more appetite to play for Newcastle than Owen has so far, and others too.

Would you call that a "bad influence", No I don't think so.

Remember when Bellamy missed about 2 months for Newcastle, then went off for 2 weeks with the Welsh national squad without having kicking a ball with Newcastle since his injury?

Funny this has never been brought up.

Precisely....
