Blackburn for sale

Blackburn Rovers say they have held a "cordial and productive meeting" with Indian businessman Ahsan Ali Syed's company over a proposed takeover.

Bahrain-based Syed, owner of Western Gulf Advisory, confirmed on Monday he was keen to buy the Lancashire club.

He said he could give manager Sam Allardyce a transfer kitty of £100m.

Blackburn said talks were "ongoing" after Syed had voiced plans to complete his takeover of the Premier League club within two weeks.

But the club managed by Sam Allardyce, which began the season with a win over Everton, declined to comment further.

Syed, 36, is reported to have about £300m to spend on the takeover, a sum that would both cover the club's debts and allow new players to be bought.

blackburn? ffs - what's wrong with us? surely we've more potential (stadium/support base/facilities) for any prospective buyer than sodding blackburn

I reckon they'll have hardly any debt thanks to Jack Walker and will be much more reasonably priced. A sort of start from scratch opportunity. Ashley probably wants c. £300m all in.

Taking the black and white specs off for a second and they're on a pretty equal footing to us to be honest. You might find that a bitter pill to swallow but ultimately it's true.

Both were 'up there' in the early days of the Premiership, both have been relegated and come back up. Both are relatively struggling buy comparison of their recent past.

The comparative differences are that we have a bigger fan base/stadium and they've won something in recent years (League and League Cup). I might be in the minority here but I'd swap our stadium/fan base for the success they've had.

in order for blackburn to fill their ground, one in every three people that live in the town have to turn up. they're nowhere near us in terms of the kind of revenue they can generate on match day.

they have had the success with trophies that we haven't - and i agree, i'd sooner that than a full house of 50k every week - but if you were looking at the two clubs as an investor, newcastle is a much bigger global brand and we have a lot more potential then them.

You'd be daft to buy either from the pov of an investor imo.

Exaclty the point I'm trying to make. Dr G's suggestion was that we should be much further ahead of Blackburn in the pecking order. I reckon that currently we're very equal.

And we need more spending on the squad than they do. Potential's an overused notion anyway regarding this sort of thing. We've got more potential to go down if we don't buy a striker than anything else.

The most overused notion is this belief that a buyout returns instant success and a bottomless pit of money to spend. Chelsea and Man City are the exception to the norm on that one on a massive, massive scale.

Yep, and that twat claimed he'd have bought us if Ashley's price had been reasonable, didn't he?

It sticks in the throat somewhat that those that took over at Man City were interested in us but at the time Ashley didn't want to sell :)

obviously it depends on the investor. i'd be excited if i was a blackburn fan about whether the rumours about this bloke are to be believed.

that said, i was excited about ashley taking over too. who'd have known we'd be getting the country's most incompetent billioanaire?

Exactly. We were excited about Ashley, Liverpool were excited about the Yanks, West Ham were excited about the Icelandics, Portsmouth were excited about that Arab fella.

In some respects we've not been managed (from a fianancial perspective) terribly. At least we haven't been used to serve debt in the same way Liverpool, Manchester United and others have.

Personally I think there should be legislation in place to prevent that from happening where football clubs are concerned.

Since I have the internet today, I'll contribute. This Sayed chap is saying the right things to get me excited about having some money to spend in the transfer market for a change, and to build us up and so on, but I'm sure Ashley said similar things, so I'll be cautiously optimistic. As for why he didn't buy you, I guess its becaue we are a cheap date. £20m or so to buy the club, and about the same to clear the debt is probably a lot less than our fat friend would expect for any prospective Newcastle owner to offer. If both clubs were on offer for a similar price, then you'd be a far better deal.

I hope that Sayed isn't like that Saudi 'fake Sheikh' who owned Portsmouth for a couple of months, but Blackburn are in a damned if we do, damned if we don't situation. Either we take the leap of faith with Sayed, who does seem to check out, or the Walker Trust keeps us afloat, but on starvation rations.

I just hope we don't throw money around like Man City and Chelsea, and offer £50m for good players like Milner or Barry, and give them £200,000 p/w wages. I'd rather grow the club more slowly and look for value for money. But then I'm probably a right blue cock.
