Nile At The Double In Practise Match

By Dan King

Nile Ranger scored two goals in the space of a minute to salvage a 2-2 draw for Newcastle in this afternoon's behind-closed-doors friendly against Scottish Premier League side St. Mirren.

The game took place at United's Darsley Park Training Centre to maintain the match-fitness of some of The Magpies' fringe players, with the opening Reserve league game against Sunderland still three weeks away.

As well as teenage striker Ranger, the likes of Xisco, Kazenga LuaLua and James Tavernier were given an opportunity to impress the watching Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood, while Billy Knott, a left-back recently released by Chelsea, played the full 90 minutes.

And midfielder Alan Smith played for more than an hour after shaking off the minor ankle problem which ruled him out of Newcastle's last couple of first-team friendlies.

Amid heavy rain and a strong wind, Peter Beardsley's side fell behind to a close-range finish from Buddies striker Gareth Wardlaw in the first-half, before Paul McQuade made it 2-0 with a magnificent 25-yard goal on 75 minutes.

But on 80 minutes, Ranger finished well after a strong run down the left-hand channel, before equalising a minute later, sliding home to convert following good work by substitute Sammy Ameobi.

After recovering from his cruciate ligament injury, Billy came back into the academy team but struggled to adapt to the team’s new 4-4-2 diamond formation, having spent his formative years at the club solely operating in a 4-4-3.

my local side afc wimbledon, have just taken on an arsenal reserve left back and he's definitely got something about him. apparently the arsenal trainers weren't happy with him doubling up as a robber and a drink driver.

could be worse, what with all the chelsea players being such good role models?!?!

Kicked out of Chelsea's academy for disciplinary issues, then had trials with Yeovil and Bournemouth.

Sounds like a fucking gem

No different really to Ranger and no one holds that against him now.
