accadacca 0
PREMIER League new boys Newcastle have been dealt a major blow with defensive lynchpin Steven Taylor ruled out until October. The former England Under-21 captain dislocated his shoulder in a friendly at Carlisle last week. Taylor has had his shoulder pinned and faces an eight-week lay-off before he can think about playing again. The 24-year-old suffered two major injuries last season, damaging a knee, then breaking his jaw in a training-ground clash with Andy Carroll. But he was back to top fitness before the collision at Carlisle. The latest setback means Toon boss Chris Hughton will need funds to strengthen the centre of defence. Danny Simpson is out until September, leaving only Fabrico Coloccini and Mike Williamson as fit central-halves. Deano 0
No not good at all but i would think this confirms he wont leave now. Id be happy startin with williamson and coloccini and with kadar in reserve but i think its increasingly likely now that big sol campbell could sign for us. Wouldnt be a bad signing either, although a distinct lack of pace, is experience will do us good in our 1st year back in the big time.
OTF 7626
The one good thing is that it should be easy for him to stay fit and keep his touch throughout his layoff. Williamson is decent but we definitely need more depth in central defence. I don't really think that Campbell is the answer, but he'd be better than nothing. Papa Lazaru 0
This is NUFC, we all knew we' start the prem campaign with a catalogue of injuries and slowly but surely we're getting there. 3 defenders down now, and i'm sure now that Barton has put himself forward for England he'll be next, followed by whichever striker looks in best form! I hope we are signing Campbell as we're looking very short on centrebacks at the moment with any real prem experience as Kadar and Williamson have none and Colo only the one season. John Anderson said on the radio last week that MW did a good job in the CCC but he wasn't sure he'd be able to make the next step. What JA really meant was he aint good enough which is why Pompey didnt play him after signing him. The thought of ball watching Colo and cart horse Mike together fills me with utter dread. No. Pompey had a clause stating that they had to pay watford more money when he played a game. Pompey had no money, therefore couldn't afford to play him. I take it you think he'll do ok in the prem ?? - I am far from convinced esp with the slow midfield infront.
OTF 7626
Not convinced, but I'd say he deserves a chance to prove himself. It was not so long ago that we played Peter Ramage in the Premier League, I'd have to say that Williamson is better than Ramage (though Ramage always tried hard). It's never good going into a season with someone who is unproven, particularly so when they're likely to be partnering someone who can potentially lose interest and confidence like we saw with Coloccini in his first premier league season. Neither are particularly quick at all, and quite slow in terms of acceleration so that's always a cause for big concern in probably the fastest league in the world. Sol Campbell won't help in that respect. It's lucky we've got Enrique to inject a little pace into our back four, as Taylor himself is not at all quick.
