Dr Gloom 22536
nufc.com don't sound too positive Newcastle's pursuit of French international midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa (pictured) looks a little less likely to succeed, given the latest updates from his current employer, Olympique Marseille and from French sources. Hopes had been high on Monday that a deal would be concluded, despite the two clubs still haggling over the level of fee payable for a season-long loan at SJP. French newspaper L'Equipe wrote: Hatem Ben Arfa is undoubtedly very close to discovering the joys of the Premier League. The former Lyon player has in effect been authorised by Marseilles to negotiate with the directors of the Magpies for a loan of one year with an option to buy according to the club cited by Agence France Presse. The information was later denied by Jean-Claude Dassier (Chairman) and Didier Deschamps (coach). The two clubs have agreed a loan of one season for €1.2m, together with an option to buy at the end of the season. The amount of the option has not been revealed. However, Monday evening then brought the following comments from Dassier on the official OM website: "We have a meeting every Monday. It was a professional meeting at the heart of the transfer window. We had to sit down and make sure we all knew where we are and everything went well. We made a certain number of decisions but you have to be discreet during the transfer window. Our desire is to reinforce the squad. "Newcastle United are interested (in Hatem Ben Arfa) but for the moment we have not reached an agreement, so we aren’t talking about it. We are working with the representatives of Newcastle and with Hatem Ben Arfa." Perhaps significantly, Dassier then went on to confirm that recent press speculation of a move for Seville striker Luis Fabiano was accurate - but refused to comment on the progress of that transfer. Other sources in France have claimed that in order for the Fabiano deal to go through, there would have to be outward movement from OM to balance the books. And while that was expected to have been Ben Arfa, were a proposed deal taking striker Mamadou Niang to Turkish side Fenerbahce go through, removing Ben Arfa from the OM wage bill wouldn't be a necessity. The player is claimed to be keen on moving to SJP have expressed a preference to play in England, rather than take up offers from German and Portuguese sides. 23 year-old Ben Arfa should win his eighth full international cap, having been named in the French squad for a friendly against Norway in Oslo on Wednesday. Why work with us if the ultimate aim isn't to give us the player?

Andrew 4969
Why work with us if the ultimate aim isn't to give us the player? well if they have terms that we refuse to meet then I assume that thing called "negotiating" will happen if we don't satisfy them then they're not going to turn round and say "well go on then, you are NEWCASTLE afterall, how can we turn you down?" they'll tell us to ram it
Ketsbaia 0
Do yourself a favour and don't go on the Ben Arfa thread N-O. I think there's a few actually on the verge of doing themselves in.

Deano 0
Aye he would be a class signing but i wont lose no sleep if it doesnt come off. After all do you think CH would drop anyone to accomodate him if he signed? I can only think he would play behind Carroll in the 'Nolan' role and play Nolan and Guthrie in the middle. Deano 0
Jonas is right footed anyways so it's hardly a big deal for him to switch to his correct side. And drop Routledge? Unlikely...If anythin Routledge offers more than Gutierrez...but thats my point, CH wont drop anyone imo.

loonyTOON 10
Shove Jonas at right back.... Seconds thought's might not be the best idea. CH will drop. If you noticed when we played Rangers, Jonas was coming across to the right a fair bit, so that both himself and Wayne we're working the ball together. Could CH play Ben Arfa (if he signs) on the left, Wayne on the right, and Jonas behind the striker? This way he could move to both the right and left and double up with either winger. Just a thought. Wayne has to be at RM though no doubt, the difference he brought when he came in January was massive.

Nolan on second half to nick a goal and chase the defenders every now and then. Either Loven or Big Andy up top depending on who we are playing. Kitman 2207
The longer this drags on, the more it seems likely to fall through. It would be just like us to miss out on a quality player for the sake of a few grand.
