If Sulzeer had any pace at all I'd take him but he is far too slow these days. Well past his sell by date and just because he's opted to move to the north east isn't a reason to be interested in him.

Wasn't he officially found to be the second fastest player at Arsenal last season?

that article was a farce, it wasn't 2nd fastest at Arsenal it was 2nd fastest in the whole fucking league

Football’s fliers hit incredible speeds and Walcott’s bursts mean he would run 9.9secs for 100m – if he could sustain his top speed of 10.1m per second.

WALCOTT 22.72 mph

CAMPBELL 22.50 mph

DROGBA 22.27 mph

TORRES 22.27 mph

ANELKA 22.05 mph

FABREGAS 22.05 mph

A COLE 22.05 mph

CLICHY 21.82 mph

ROONEY 21.82 mph

GERRARD 21.60 mph (The Sun)

No Swp, Lennon, Agbonlahor, Vela, Sagna, Evra

in short theres a ton of blatantly obvious people missing, and considering Bolt's top speed is 24mph there is no fucking way campbell is anywhere near it.

it's probably something stupid like top speed achieved over any distance rather than being able to maintain a decent speed over one.

Exactly.

He's a big name but has he really got that much of an ego at his age? Him dropping down divisions to play for Notts County - for the money - is a worry but on the other hand he was surprisingly impressive upon his return for Arsenal last season.

He's experienced and that can only help us. We've got a relatively young defence - only Williamson and Coloccini are 26 or older. Shame he's a CB - I'm not convinced about our RB options; Perch and Simpson have a lot to prove. Decent in the Championship but that's not saying a great deal.

It all depends on the wages.

On low wages it's a good signing, on high ones it's not.

As simple as that for me.

I fear that the club will have him on prety high wages using the fact that there was no transfer fee as justification. Given that there's no way we'll be able to sell him the high wages aren't really justified. The only time they would be with a player of that age is if they have an obvious affiliation with the club and a passion for wearing the shirt. With Campbell we have no idea how much he cares about the club, but chances are it's not enough to make him worth the wages that the club will like;y be playing him.

10.1 metres per second. If they ran at that pace over 100 metres it would be done in 9.9 seconds.

Of course the article is a load of crap so it means nothing at all.

Discounting the fact that it's rubbish it's not really Campbell's top speed that's the issue, it's his acceleration and ability to change directions which I'd say he probably is comparable to the QE2 in that respect.

“The club is being run completely differently now.”

“The days of throwing money away are over.”

“There was a budget limit and there was an age limit. Mike wants players who will have a saleable value.”

So the age limit is 36?

Shamelessly stolen from Armchair Pundit in the Transfer Talk Thread

Newcastle have won the race to sign former Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell.

Free agent Campbell, 35, who had been offered a two-year deal by Celtic, now lives in the North East and has been persuaded to continue his playing career there with Chris Hughton’s newly promoted side.

Campbell got married yesterday and is expected to sign for the Geordies once he returns from honeymoon.

He'd improve the back four, that's for sure and is the kind of experience that's useful in a relegation battle. I'm assuming that he comes with big wage demands though and I'm surprised Ashley would pay them. Providing it's true of course.

I just don't get it.

£50K PER WEEK is taken off the wage bill with Butt going and is almost replaced by a 35 year old Campbell who will have no reslae value but will cost approx £5m when his 2 year deal ends.

Another central defender is not required UNLESS Taylor is in a bad way OR the club know he's going.

The Gosling deal is a good one, and the Perch one is a no lose situation, but Campbell ? Bloody hell man even Kenwyn Jones destroyed him 2 years ago - 2 years ago !!

Would be great cover on reasonable wages but I honestly wouldn't start him ahead of Collocini or Taylor at this point, even if he still is decent he'd have to be replaced so soon as to render it all a bit pointless. Very decent centre back cover for a team just coming back up if that is to be the case but this talk of him being made captain is worrying.

He is captain material (I'd think), but I;m not sure about him walking into the side and being made captain. I think that should be earned no matter who he is. What he does have in abundance though is experience and I think he would improve our back four.

wasn't that over 20 meters as opposed to running 100m. there is absolutely no way he'd do that.

for the record, someone like campbell would be very useful. i don't think we'd get a full season out of him.

when did we last sign someone as over the hill as this ?

The last time we got promoted, for instance, signing such a player at such an age was a complete no brainer.

Welcome back again, to the days of Seymour, Westwood etc. Lets hope someone like the Halls and Shepherd come along quickly to rescue us, again, from a nightmare of an owner.

Oh how so very predictable.

What about John Barnes and fucking Ian Rush?

I still remember the image of the fat cunt Barnes blowing out of his arse when chasing a pass ffs, and I was only a bairn at the time.

Peter Beardsley?

(not for a moment over the hill but decidely dodgy on an age basis)

Well. We will see if they balance it out by buying players of the calibre of Rob Lee, John Beresford, Andy Cole, Barry Venison, Scott Sellars, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Darren Peacock etc etc etc...

Oh. And a small thing called ambition to try and win the league and qualify for europe.

How much do you want to bet me that they don't attempt it ?

fit as a fiddle, younger, and totally committed to Newcastle United. Massive difference.

Why are you derailing the thread? Fuck me you really are mentally ill. Everybody knows your stance on the boardroom politics of the last 20 years, why the need to remind us?

Edit: And why would I make that bet? Have you somehow gotten the idea that I think the current board are ambitious?

I'm not derailing anything. I'm just not very impressed by this "signing". To me, its more proof the club has stepped back 20 years.

My opinion. And I'm confident I am right.

Do you want to bet me they don't show the ambition to win the league or qualify for europe, and put us back to the levels expected before, given a certain time span or not ?

Again, nobody disagrees with you that the current board isn't ambitious, in fact we all strongly agree with you. But for some reason you seem to think that we're all Ashley fans apart from you, and it's your mission to convert us and prove us wrong. Just cut it out ffs

you are wrong. I'm quite aware the vast majority on here realise Ashley is a 3rd rate twat and has dragged the club back 20 years. Unfortunately, there are still a few left, of which yourself is the most notable, who still don't realise that we need someone like the Halls and Shepherd again to restore the standards and expectations we had got used to.

To get back on tack here, this is such a signing.

Oh, and as for "cut it out ffs" your thread and spat with Kevin makes interesting reading for someone who doesn't want to dispute pointlessly on a message board. Thompers.

Again failing to acknowledge that Shepherd and the Halls had the club in decline towards the end of their reign, they were in the process of failing to restore the standards you talk about when they bolted. No evidence exists at all that they had any ability to turn around what was an obvious tailspin.

Sorry if that doesn't apply your shit-stupid logic of

Ashley=bad so Shepherd=good, and also of your logic of Shepherd=Unpopular so Ashley=popular.

You asked a question about the signing, I answered with two further over-the-hill players.

We're signing a declining player on a free, yet it appears that you prefer to spend millions on declining players, as it's a sign of ambition? I'd rather not sign declining players at all, but at least if we're going to, we have a board that knows that spending millions on them just isn't good business. Not ambitious, but a little bit more sensible than predecessors.
