The former England defender, a free agent after his short-term deal with Arsenal ended, was having a medical on Tyneside today ahead of a reunion with Chris Hughton. The Newcastle United manager, who coached Campbell at Tottenham Hotspur, fended off competition from, among others, Celtic and Sunderland to recruit the 35-year-old and trusts the centre-back's experience will help reinforce a defence debilitated by the loss of Steven Taylor with a shoulder injury. Taylor, who has a history of shoulder trouble and recently underwent surgery on the joint, will miss the start of the season and could be out for three months or more but Campbell's arrival should compensate for his absence as Hughton prepares newly-promoted Newcastle for their reintroduction to the rigours of Premier League life. The only concern is that a player who turns 36 in September has missed much of pre-season training having returned from his honeymoon only at the weekend. Campbell had been linked with a move to Newcastle ever since he walked out on Notts County following an unsuccessful stint at Meadow Lane last autumn. Apart from his history with Hughton during the pair's White Hart Lane days the centre-half has become a resident of Northumberland, where he lives with his wife, the interior designer Fiona Barratt. He will become Hughton's third signing of the summer, joining the former Nottingham Forest defender James Perch and the former Everton and Plymouth Argyle midfielder Dan Gosling. Perch, though, may be sidelined for the beginning of the season by a heel injury and Gosling is not expected to be ready for a first-team debut until January as he continues his rehabilitation from major knee surgery last March. Campbell, whose demand for a £35,000-a-week salary deterred some, will renew old acquaintance with Peter Beardsley. The former England forward has been named as Newcastle's reserve-team coach and will be assisted by his fellow former international compatriotSteve Stone. When he returned to Arsenal last season, he had 2 quick, quality fullbacks beside him - Sagna and Clichy, plus a quality centre half in Vermalen, with a good ''shield'' infront of him. What has he now got ? A fellow central defender who has no pace, ball watches and who thinks he is way better than he is. Two fullbacks that are certainly nowhere near the standard he is used to playing with, and a midfield shield that has no ''legs'' in it. What will probably happen next season is that a high line won't be taken to aid going forward, but a line somewhere between the 18 yard box and halfway, to nullify the prospect of being hit by quick, pacey strikers. This in turn will affect the team attack wise and encourage the opposition to come on all game. Surely there must be a decent defender with a modicum of pace somewhere in Europe or the world ?? He may turn out to be an inspired signing, but I'm willing to bet that his season will be hampered by injuries as the physical demands on a 36 year old are too intense. A few of you have alluded to ryan taylor as our first chice right back, but really the problem will be that whilst Campbell over 10-20 yards is still relatively quick, all I’d do is stick a fast forward up against him and the twat from argentina and I reckon you’d get goals aplenty against us. Maybe we could convert one of our faster reserves into a centre back? Maybe we could play the world cups formation of 4-2-3-1 and playing on the counter. I think we have just enough quality to survive this league, but with our infamous abililty to break players that are injury prone and relatively paper thin squad, it will be tough. OTF 7214 Posted July 28, 2010 Share Posted July 28, 2010 If the back four is Campbell, Coloccini, Ryan Taylor and Enrique then I'll be quite worried. Three of them are very slow. Their lack of pace will no doubt look to be exploited by everyone we come up against. Even with Simpson or Perch there we're not that much quicker, and with no real specialist defensive midfielder so shield our centre backs things could get pretty messy. To be fair Campbell probably is ok once he gets moving, it would just be changing direction and initial accelleration that he's poor at. I guess we have to hope that at the first available chance he clutters into opposing players and slows them down that way. Steven Taylor has looked pretty good for us at right back in the past. Going forward he's not great on the ball, but he does love to push into the opposing box and has a decent knack for chipping in with the odd goal. Unfortunately he's also far from express.
