Why don't you try this Leazes?

http://www.oldversion.com/Windows-Media-Player.html

Just install the version of WMP you were happy with.

can you uninstall WMP from a windows installation ?????

Try:

Start > Control panel > add or remove programs

and get rid of anything to do with WMP.

If it doesn't show up there, clicking "Show updates" at the top might do it.

Add/Remove Windows Components on the left-hand side might do it too.

So next time you create these folders, create a playlist in iTunes. Get all the music in the folder and copy it into the playlist. iTunes will display the size of the playlist in mb and time.

aye, I'm realising thats the way it works.

Bit of a pain if I have 80 Northern Soul tracks and they are scattered all over itunes.......................for example

Still can't believe they have dropped this facility in WMP and there is fuck all else that will do this job easily.

Not really, just put "Northern Soul" as a genre, then filter by that.

I think you're over-complicating this.

Not sure it's that simple....for leazes

The tracks aren't ordered in Itunes so he'd still have to individually find those 80 tracks to set the genre in Itunes.

I think what you mean is highlight all 80 tracks in Windows explorer and set the genre in there as follows....

Right click > Properties > Select Summary tab > Press advanced button > Type "playlist 1" or something in the genre.

Then in Itunes he can create the auto playlist as follows....

file > new smart playlist > genre = 'playlist 1'

All your tracks will be in that playlist with a total time displayed at the bottom.

Assuming the 80 tracks in question are spread across various directories on his hard drive, I don't see why the iTunes route is any more (or less) complicated than anything else. And if they're in the same directory then dragging them to a playlist is a doddle. Not for the first or the last time in this thread, I'm confused. :icon_lol:

it doesn't show that ? If I select General / advanced instead of Summary / advanced, I get advanced attributes and options - file is ready for archiving / for fast searching allow windows to index this file [both ticked] ........................................ then more options compress contents to save disk space / encrypt contents to secure data

If I select Summary / advanced as you say I get a list of "multiple values"

Then in Itunes he can create the auto playlist as follows....

file > new smart playlist > genre = 'playlist 1'

All your tracks will be in that playlist with a total time displayed at the bottom.

I follow this which makes sense and sounds just the job, if I was able to label it as "playlist 1"

ah. If I type in the name of the folder into search [in itunes] it displays the tracks of the named folder :icon_lol:

Why does it show some tracks twice ?

You've got to copy all your music into iTunes.

how do you update it - especially after I've changed a folder title ?

Not sure it will update anything in iTunes. I just edit everything inside the programme, copy all music into iTunes directly, then set all the tags correctly and put it in a playlist.

I was just wondering if you can edit a folder with files in it then does that not mean you have 2 copies of the file? When i download mp3 off a blog, the music goes into my downloads folder. I then copy the music over to iTunes and delete the copy in the download folder.

Not sure but that might be why you can see 2 copies of the same tune (unless its just a duplicate you didnt know you had).

I've deleted all my songs from itunes because I think it uploaded everything in my portable hard disk, which accounts for having 2 copies of the songs, because they are all backed up on the portable.

So I am renaming every folder, as HF told me to do, and uploading them folder by folder from C drive.

If I type in the name of the folder, then I can listen to that folder, with the times displayed. If I delete a track from the folder because I don't like it, then I also delete it from itunes.

This makes sense and hopefully if it works like this it is doing what I want.

I did?

As long as it's working for you. Everyone uses these things differently.

post nr 55.

Thanks to everyone for the help, but I've trashed itunes for the moment and gone back to using WMP. I don't want to try and install an old version, because various sites I've googled say it is risking a windows xp crash. Basically if I will load the tracks into my roxio to time them when ready to burn which is a ball ache but it seems everything else is the same.

WMP / Microsoft ? Fuck off.

All I want is to play a sodding folder of music automatically and see how much music it contains in time terms.

... Leazes, are you going to a folder of music and clicking play-all, rather than, say, opening iTunes and just playing whatever's in the library?

ok

as a suggestion, instead of stubbornly clinging to the cumbersome old way, embrace the simplified new way?

Open iTunes and make a play list (drag and drop) which has the tracks you'd like to listen to on a CD, then burn the CD. The playlist will tell you the size and duration of the collection. You can even use the interface to increase or decrease the gap between the tracks.

Honestly the way you're playing music is the positively Amish in it's approach.

ok. When I loaded itunes up, it uploaded my entire music collection, both on hard disk and my portable back up, which is why I had everything twice. In perfect duplicate.

So how do I upload a single folder to itunes ie only the ones I want ?

file - add folder - find the one you want and add it.

done.

Has that worked Leazes?

haven't done it yet mate, I'll let you know, don't see why it won't its just a matter of me getting used to it. It's only to time and split things like the Northern Soul I mentioned.

By the way, I burn these to CD's after converting them to .wav format to play on hifi.

Most modern hifis can play .mp3 files mate. How old is yours?

edit when you burn in iTunes you're given the option of burning as an audio cd or an .mp3 cd. I'm sure you'd be able to play the sudio cd on your hifi.

its a technics CD player, I've no intention of getting rid of it tbh, or any of my hifi. Suppose you have a point though ie getting an mp3 player into it, like in the car. I used to be more into quality hifi but I'm not so bothered now.

I use db amp converter to convert them to wav files. Freeware file I kept from a few years ago, and I like roxio to burn them because it does home made basic labels.

Storage is cheap as chips these days.

No reason to be using MP3 at all.

fair point. Most of them are stored in their original mp3 state though. I also use mp3 gain to level off the volumes before converting to .wav

If you convert mp3 to wav, isnt that just an mp3? Since the encoding will have stripped out the high and low frequencies in the first place, putting it back into .wav from mp3 wont improve the sound? Or a meringue?

You need to use an appropriate encoding method to convert CDs to digital wavs. If you allow it to turn into an mp3, the encoding means permanent loss of audio quality.
