iTunes. It's the best, by far. I'd recommend it, even if you don't have an iPod.

new version of WMP doesn't time groups of tracks [which I use to measure how many will go onto a CD]

I oppose this, I have an Iphone and have recently abandoned Itunes. Due to it constantly deleting my library everytime. Considering your quite cautious with computers Leazes, it also seems to use up alot of process power on my laptop, so therefore it could slow down, your already slow system considerably.

I've started using this, and haven't had any problems with it.

I've not had any problems with iTunes since I started using it, which was Christmas. I find it simple to use and all that. As you've said but, it does take up a lot of RAM.

Gets a rough deal, but I really don't mind Windows Media Player. Does what I want from a cataloguing perspective, at least, which is important when you've got as much shit music as me.

I use iTunes, for ease more than anything else, I don't think I'd see a massiv e difference if I switched to WMP or anything. iTunes does everything I need it to, to the standard I need and I'm yet to have any problems with it.

VLC

Use that for watching movies, but is it much cop for music?

(I love the feature that allows you to have the film on as the wallpaper of your desktop. :jesuswept: )

I use iTunes as I have my music all set-up in it. I also have my iPod, shuffle, and phone all hooked up through it. I use it for podcasts and the radio too.

If there's something else out there that does all of this I'd be happy to give it a shot.

Like Toonpack says, it plays everything.

I store everything in Itunes and use that for tagging stuff. VLC is my default player for the odd occasion I open a file(s) because Itunes destroys your PC and takes a lot more processing to open.

Hardly listen to music on the PC though. I just listen to my ipod.
