France striker Thierry Henry has signed for Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls from Barcelona on a "multi-year contract".

The former Arsenal captain, 32, is expected to make his debut for Red Bulls in a friendly against Tottenham in the United States on 22 July.

Henry signed for Barcelona in 2007 and had one year remaining on his contract but the club agreed to let him leave.

strange to see him give up so early. i suppose he probably couldn't bring himself to play for a second rate european side after being at barca and fancied a new easy way to make some big money

I reckon he knows he's finished. Not even a shadow of his former self these days.

He lost a lot of pace and once he won La Liga and the CL with Barca he probably lost a lot of his will to win things seeing as he's now won the league in France, England and Spain, the champions league, the world cup, Euro 2002 and countless domestic cups, what else was left do do :icon_lol:

When you consider we'll be watching a donkey like ameobi who never had any pace it's difficult to say henry couldn't cut it in the premier league. Not up to his standards in the past but still far better than many premier league players.

he’s had a back problem since before he joined Arsenal. It’s been getting progressively worse throughout his career.

Nice pension top-up for him.

Don’t suppose he’s realised how many Irish there are in NY!

I agree but it's all relative, isn't it? When you've won the WC, European Championship, FA Cup, Premier League, Champions League and so on you probably need a bit more motivation than looking in the mirror and telling yourself you can still do a better job than the likes of Shola.

Very true. And Henry wants to be the centre of attention which he will be for a short time in New York.

It really just boils down to money though. Even if a premier league club could offer the salary, the endorsements he gets will be massive. Picture up in Times Square, new Marlboro Man perhaps?

Definitely gone for the money. Not that I blame him. Maybe he'll take over a few of those endorsements Tiger Woods no longer has :jesuswept:
