Food Standards Agency Abolished

The food Standards Agency (FSA) will be abolished today by the Government. Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, will confirm the consumer watchdog is being scrapped when he sets out plans to overhaul the NHS.

The abolition is part of a drive to cut the number of quangos, but will fuel charges Mr Lansley is being soft on companies targeting junk food at families with young children. Doctors are also likely to disagree as they have called for "fat taxes" on unhealthy food. The NHS reform plans will be set out in a White Paper. Mr Lansley said they would cut the cost of NHS bureaucracy by £1bn.

The FSA has 2,000 staff and an annual budget of £135m. Its duties will be transferred to the Department for Health and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Incredibly short sighted.

How can they believe it will save money on the NHS by doing nothing whatsoever to combat the increasingly grotesque dietary habits of the general public.

Maybe they want people to die younger, tends to be cheaper overall.

Trouble is, that idiocy is just a tiny element of the wider fucktardedness displayed by the nation as a whole. Where do you find an agency that can even start to deal with that?

I wouldn't mind if they whacked a shitload of tax on high salt/sugar/fat foods and spent it on the NHS like they do with booze and tabs, but if they're going to leave it up to people to decide for themselves, the least they can do is provide a bit of context.

But no, they'll leave it to Cadbury's to inform the public as they see fit.

Whats the problemo? Doesnt say they are going to stop anything, just get another department to pull its finger out and do the work instead.

Don't the Food Standards Agency also investigate dodgy resturants that give food poisoning to people as well? If they do, then who would take over that role? I'm all for cutting quangos, but there are a few that are actually doing good work. For example, we need to have a trade and finance authority that really has heay duty weapons against dodgy deals and so forth, so there will be no more opaque hedge funds or bribes to Arabs who want arms.
