Newcastle have completed a surprise deal for Everton runaway Dan Gosling.

 

The England under-21 starlet had talks with Bolton Wanderers, West Ham and Sunderland before opting for Toon in a switch worth £5.5million to him over four years.

 

Gosling was allowed to leave Goodison for nothing because of an administrative blunder by the Mersey men, who had verbally offered him a new deal but crucially had put nothing in writing before a Premier League deadline.

 

He would have earned around £15,000 a week at Everton but is picking up closer to £25,000 a week on Tyneside because there is no transfer fee involved.

 

Newcastle were the only one of the interested clubs to promise £4m-rated Gosling that they would sign him even if they have to pay a transfer fee once an Everton appeal is heard.

 

Toon rushed the deal through even though the midfielder will miss the first three months of the season following knee surgery.

 

Happy with this deal tbh. We need more quality in central midfield.

 

So am I. Cost Everton 1.5 mil when he was 18. Think once he's fit, he'll walk into the starting 11XI alongside Barton or Guthrie. From what i've read, a box to box midfielder which is what we need.

 

Gosling: 22 appearances, 4 goals for Everton.

Guthrie: 62 appearances, 6 goals for Newcastle (Prem and CC)

Nolan: 55 appearances, 17 goals for Newcastle (Prem and CC)

Barton: 47 appearances, 3 goals for Newcastle (Prem and CC)

Smith: 71 appearances, no goals for Newcastle

I expect inking the deal would be subject to a satisfactory medical, whoever he signs for. FWIW, these days there seems to be a much better rate of success with these sorts of ops, plus he's still young.

Looking on an Everton forum there's a pretty huge thread with people mainly saying he's not that great. Bit of a contradiction really as they wouldn't be posting if they didn't care. Honestly I think they though he was a pretty good player, but was down the pecking order at Everton (they do have some very good midfielders there).

 

I like the look of the signing (if it's done and no compensation is owed), but I don't know a great deal about him.

why so sure? he's not out of our league;he's an everton squad player. highly rated but a pay increase, an offer of first team football and the chance to play in front of 52k every week could tempt him.

 

we are still a decent size draw for lots of players. the doubt as to whwther we might not sign him could come from ashley and whether he will sanction moves for expensive players. but gosling falls into the category of player ashley likes: young with potential to sell on for a profit so it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

Not one person has said we'll definitely sign Gosling. But one has most definitely said we won't.

 

This thread may be worth quoting when we find out where he goes. If he does come here it's up there with the Leighton Baines line IMO
