The odds are that to win a World Cup you will have to win a penalty shootout somewhere along the way. Of the last 5 winners, only 1 hasn't had to face a penalty shootout somewhere along the way.

Well, that makes me feel a lot better. I also heard (assume it's correct as it sounds about right) that the last time Germany / West Germany failed to reach the quarter finals of a World Cup was 1938.

Well the last time England in a World Cup Finals scenario failed to get to the last eight with 11 men was 1954. So anyone could put some type of spin on it.

Aye, I started calling Danny B it for a while. I.e. hasn't got a leg to stand on. He lost both legs in a plane crash I think and then was later allowed to fly again for the RAF. Also, was he the one with the dog called 'Nigger'?

 

Apparently he trained it to shit in the neighbours garden.

The one with the dog was Guy Gibson, commander of 617 Squadron - The Dam Busters.

The dog was killed (run over) on the day of the raid and his name used as the codeword for the Mohne (I think) dam breaking. Dog's grave is still at RAF Scampton and says the name big and proud

It's a match at the knock-out stage of the World Cup, it's a match against a good team and an old rival. But in the end that's it. I said (i promise) that Germany - Italy probably should be considered the biggest game in Europe because of their respective tournament records but for us, Germany is the biggest. I then continued that, its also about the history between the teams and the perception of under-performing, or bad luck (penalities etc) from us that means a victory in an important match is due but it fell on deaf ears as by this time, she'd fallen asleep.

I totally understand the meaning of the game for English people and certainly don't want to take anything away from it or mock it. It's fair enough considering the rivalry between the two nations, not only on the football pitch. Even if some of the war rhetoric banter is getting a bit tedious over the time...
