England v Germany

The odds are that to win a World Cup you will have to win a penalty shootout somewhere along the way. Of the last 5 winners, only 1 hasn't had to face a penalty shootout somewhere along the way.

Well, that makes me feel a lot better. I also heard (assume it's correct as it sounds about right) that the last time Germany / West Germany failed to reach the quarter finals of a World Cup was 1938.

Well the last time England in a World Cup Finals scenario failed to get to the last eight with 11 men was 1954. So anyone could put some type of spin on it.

How's the other stat putting a spin on it. It's just plain fact.

Stevie Bader. :icon_lol:

:icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol: Is that with reference to that bloke who flew in the BOB, with one arm and one leg who shot 22 of them down?

Aye, I started calling Danny B it for a while. I.e. hasn't got a leg to stand on. :icon_lol: He lost both legs in a plane crash I think and then was later allowed to fly again for the RAF. Also, was he the one with the dog called 'Nigger'?

Apparently he trained it to shit in the neighbours garden.

:icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

What a fuckin legend.

The one with the dog was Guy Gibson, commander of 617 Squadron - The Dam Busters.

The dog was killed (run over) on the day of the raid and his name used as the codeword for the Mohne (I think) dam breaking. Dog's grave is still at RAF Scampton and says the name big and proud :)

Assuming it's Douglas Bader, who lost his legs in a flying accident pre war, became a Wing Leader before being shot down and captured. Coincidently I have his autograph on a rather fine first edition print by Taylor.

I'm guessing like Bader you are a little stumpy twat

Didn't realise you were a military man, TP.

Am not, WW2 aeroplanes are my secret trainspotter-ism

So basically you're into Military History and you're pretty pro-War yet you've never been in the forces? Funny and a little bit tragic tbh.

Got to win this tbh. The thought of Isegrim coming on here all conciliatory afterwards whilst actually strutting round his lounge like Andy Moller is just a bit too much to take for me.

As ever that's a reach?? I am not pro-war at all, just accept sometimes it happens (or needs to happen) and when it does it's bad.

I'm no Sigismund von Schlichting but I have an interest in war history, not that I'm pro war, don't see anything wrong with it to be honest. I find it fascinating if am a sad cunt for enjoying reading and watching programmes about it then that's what I am.

Another thing. The German attitude of 'we dont care about England, its not really a rivalry' is the epitome of arrogance for me too. We beat them possibly unfairly in 66 and that still gets discussed, we have been involved in great classic games together. Their stand alone record at major tournaments is irelevant to the rivalry. Its the results between us that matter.

If Germany dont consider England one of their main international rivals then who is for them? You cant ignore history, they started wars which decimated millions and millions of people, in my view denying the rivalry is, in part, denying their past.

In no way I said or wanted to suggest that there isn't any rivalry. Of course England is seen as a rival - how could it not looking at the history of the teams and those classic matches? Of course there is a fair share of idiots thinking of English people as "Inselaffen" but then I think the predominant feeling of the gereral public towards England rather is one of respect. And as much as our only tabloid (Bild Zeitung) is probably trying to stir things up a bit themselves, people are not getting as agitated about the match as English people do. It's a match at the knock-out stage of the World Cup, it's a match against a good team and an old rival. But in the end that's it. It's totally different to the climate a match against the Dutch would create, which would indeed bring out the awfully worst from the German majority. You can also argue that a match against Italy - another rival - would bring out more venom from the common "kleine Deutschländer".

I have my Holland top in reserve for later tournament eventualities.

I also like Stevie's photo - though I am not sure what a picture of three (likely to be yank) pornstars at a international porn fair does actually say about Jorman people - or Stevie for that matter...

I was thinking about what the European equivalent of Brazil - Argentina was last night, as i was trying to explain to our lass how big the game was. I said (i promise) that Germany - Italy probably should be considered the biggest game in Europe because of their respective tournament records but for us, Germany is the biggest. I then continued that, its also about the history between the teams and the perception of under-performing, or bad luck (penalities etc) from us that means a victory in an important match is due but it fell on deaf ears as by this time, she'd fallen asleep.

I totally understand the meaning of the game for English people and certainly don't want to take anything away from it or mock it. It's fair enough considering the rivalry between the two nations, not only on the football pitch. Even if some of the war rhetoric banter is getting a bit tedious over the time...

Your only ally, and there's venom. I can understand the respect thing though to be honest, battered you in two world wars, battered you in a World Cup Final, greatest culture on earth, while you's are doing line dancing in tents drinking out of 4 pint glasses with leather shorts on. I think and I mean this Germans would like to be more like the English, I really believe that. Same is true of the dutch definitely, although they'd never admit it.
