England v Germany

I really think a lot of the blame lies with Capello for what happened yesterday.

Agree with you entirely on that one.

And some fucker at the FA needs to grow some balls and highlight with abundant clarity his short-comings. They're paying him a King's randsom for fuck's sake, they're entitled to demand more for their money. If he gets the hump and wants out, so be it - but he shouldn't get a penny.

Instead I expect them to fold like the cowardly bastards they are and sack him, paying him a mint in the process.

Fabio Capello and England's Dilemma: Only 34 Percent of EPL Players Are English

Matt S

Written on April 20, 2010

Are these statistics worrying for Fabio Capello?

Seemingly any English player producing even a half-decent display is met with cries of "get him on the plane!”

Questions are raised as to whether Capello should stick by the established names who performed well during the successful qualifying campaign or seek out new, potentially in-form players who might fall into the "secret weapon" category.

But, just how many players are out there for Capello to choose from?

"Lies, damned lies, and statistics"

Statistics have revealed that just one third of players who have started at least one game in the Premier League this season have been English.

More specifically of the 453 players to have started at least one game in the English top flight this season, only 155 of them have been English, clocking in at just 34 percent.

The figures hold up in another examination: in the recent Gameweek 34 of the Premier League, in which all 20 clubs played, 89 of the 271 (33 percent) players used were English.

Comparison to other major European leagues does not make it any easier to read.

Spain’s La Liga sees Spaniards make up two thirds of all players to have started a game in La Liga this season (65 percent), almost double that of the Premier League.

Italy is not far behind, with 57 percent of players starting a game in Serie A this season being Italian.

Germany finds itself halfway between England and Italy with 45 percent of players starting a game in the Bundesliga this season being German.

Wilshere, Gibbs, Rodwell have potential but they need regular club games first.

In a nutshell.

And they will get games eventually, either at their current clubs (in the case of Rodwell most likely) or in the case of someone like Gibbs, at a mid table club when he eventually gives up trying to dislodge Clichy from the Arsenal side which is basically what happened with Upson. Simply playing a lot of games won't turn them into world beaters though as Upson evidenced yesterday.

And the next generation? Where do they come from??

See this is another concern I have - private take-overs of English football clubs. West Ham have always been considered a club to blood the youth of this country and have brought a massive proportion of the current England setup through their ranks - Johnson, Terry, Ferdinand, Lampard, Defoe, Carrick all came from their academy. But that was under the old ownership - can you honestly see the likes of Gold and Sullivan continuing in that vein? Or will they buy cheap from abroad for a quick buck??

Concerning to say they least.

I'm not saying that there shouldnt be some sort of cap on the number of foreign players I just think it has little to do with Englands poor performence in this world cup where as I've said before, they have one of the best squads on paper at least. I'm unsure as to how bright or grim the future of English football is but this is a thread about yesterdays game and I think the reasons England played shit are far more to do with-

Capello playing a bad system and making poor subs

The players looking completely off the pace, most likely because of the intensity of the EPL and lack of winter break

Lack of squad unity due to a high proportion of the key players being pricks

Serioulsy man if you put your thinking cap on you'll see most of the lethargy and ego is that there isn't enough competition for places in the Eng team and that is primarily cause almost no fuker who plays for a big club qualifyies for Eng. CASE CLOSED.

Getting back to our glorious press btw, who allegedly love to report things praise-worthy...

Not an ounce of trouble from our fans out there despite the shit that's been served up - in fact, not an ounce of trouble what-so-ever. So much for all this "there'll be trouble in SA" shite peddled by the likes of Alan Brazil.

Yet not a comment in our wonderful national press about it. If our fans had gone on the rampage last night you can bet your bottom dollar it'd have got equal billing alongside the football.

God bless the wonderful Tories and their size 12s, eh? :D

Jeremy Hunt 'sorry' over Hillsborough hooligans claim

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has apologised after suggesting that hooliganism played a part in the Hillsborough football disaster.

Ninety-six Liverpool fans were crushed to death on 15 April 1989 at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium.

He praised the England fans at the 2010 World Cup saying the "terrible problems" of "Heysel and Hillsborough in the 1980s seem now to be behind us".

Investigations have found that violence played no part in the tragedy.

Mr Hunt was giving an interview following England's exit from the World Cup, where he applauded the behaviour of fans.

Apologising, he said: "I know that fan unrest played no part in the terrible events of April 1989 and I apologise to Liverpool fans and the families of those killed and injured in the Hillsborough disaster if my comments caused any offence."

Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, said: "I am absolutely fed up of people saying things like that, for 21 years we have been fighting for justice, we have been fighting to get the message out that it was not down to drink, it was not down to hooliganism.

"He is the culture secretary - he is well informed he should know better. It's not like it happened two weeks ago, this was decades ago.

"He can apologise but it has still really upset me. I only found out because someone rang me on my mobile, I have not spoken to the rest of the Hillsborough families yet because I am only just about coping with my own anger.

"I will be writing to him on behalf of all the survivors of the disaster and asking to have a meeting with him."

With Barry out of form/injured/average no-one could keep our game ticking over. Every ball we played was at 100 miles per hour and direct. You may slag me off for this but someone like David Batty would have been perfect. Nothing outrageous. He just patrolled the midfield won the ball back and kept everything simple.

Fingers crossed Phil Jones carries on like he has. Not many have Anelka and Drogba in their pocket on their debut.

He's looked class so far, was just saying in another thread it'll be interesting to see how the likes of him and Smalling get on next season as there isn't a whole lot of young centre backs coming through for England otherwise.

We have another one called Hanley who's supposed to be good too. Made his debut in the last game of the season. They could both end up like Marlon Broomes, but who knows? Jones will get plenty of practice defending anyway.

There's neither of them gonna learn to be comfortable on the ball and pass it out of defence with that fat twat in charge though.

Well the other guy I mentioned Smalling is with Man U but I take your point re Jones

UK reporter held over World Cup dressing room intrusion

A British journalist is being held over the England World Cup dressing room intrusion, South African police say.

National police commissioner Bheki Cele said the Sunday Mirror's Simon Wright had been arrested on suspicion of harbouring a fan and police believe the episode was orchestrated.

Pavlos Joseph, 32, from London, is accused of entering England's dressing room after the Algeria match.

His case has been adjourned until 30 June.

Mortgage adviser Mr Joseph was discovered in the England team's dressing room in Cape Town's Green Point stadium on 18 June.

He claims he chanced upon the team while looking for a toilet, but the fan exchanged words about England's performance with former captain David Beckham before he was escorted out of the room.

Mr Joseph appeared at a World Cup court in Cape Town on Friday, but a solicitor requested an adjournment while the defence awaited CCTV footage from inside the stadium.

Since the incident, South African police have revised security procedures at all stadiums.

When he was interviewed after it happened he did seem very rehearsed / scripted in the way he described the events. Hardly the crime of the century like.
