spongebob toonpants 4133
WASHINGTON — The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials. The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe. An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and BlackBerrys. full article here http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/14/world/as...als.html?emc=na

Rob W 0
Discovered? Or an old USGS report on potential that has been hyped??? The Beeb:- "The details of a US Geological Service survey of the country were released in 2007. The US assessment of the worth of the deposits was completed in December last yea They not only don't have the infrastructure - road, rail and water - but they don't have basic laws and regulations that will attract investment Stephanie Sanok CSIS The trillion dollar calculation was reported in the New York Times on 14 June. The BBC's Jill McGivering says that at a time of growing despair about Afghanistan and its government, the portrayal of the country as a potential goldmine could help to bolster international resolve and paint the country as a prize worth fighting for. " Afghanistan is NEVER worth fighting for.............

Guest alex
However, I thought it was about a pipeline through Afghanistan to access the gas in Tajikistan, Turkmenistan etc. rather than it being about any mineral deposits in the country itself. Billy Castell 0
Strange how these vast deposits of minerals always end up in unstable areas full of bandits, or ruled by vicious dictators, and not somewhere like..............Dorset or Belgium. Aye, from what I have seen/read I thought it was the pipeline rather than natural resources. Does anyone know what type of resources found? Cant read the article from where I'm browsing. Billy Castell 0
Maybe not Iraq, as they'd be surrounded by the septics, with Iran, Qatar, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia all nearby. It would be harder to attack Israel for a laugh. What they'd really want is for Korea to go pear shaped, and have a massive war, thus removing a lot of US soldiers from that area.
