Cornwall, Is it worth the trek

I much prefer Devon! the beaches in Cornwall are good but the countryside is no where near as nice as Devon.

The surfing in North Devon is good at places like Croyde (gets very busy) and Saunton Sands (great beach)

East Devon (where I live) is very beautiful with rolling hills and woodland, and the South Hams are stunning Blackpool beach reminds me of Greece and Salcombe, Dartmouth are great for yachting etc.

The weather has been awful for the last 3 summers, hopefully we will have a decent summer this year!!!

 

 

Just googled south hams and this picture keeps coming up. Can you say where it is? Also any reccomendations for nice port towns in Devon. Something along the Weymouth lines perhaps.

Both places are good - but the weather isn't all that better than elsewhere in the UK - a little bit warmer maybe but Cornwall is open to every "breeze" off the Atlantic and Devon can be like the Lakes - pretty wet

 

The scenery is different and the best thing is to stay away from the main centres like Newquay and St Ives (and certainly Padstein and Rock) in mid summer

 

off the main A30 (pretty much dual carriageway all the way through Devon and pretty fast through Cornwall) the roads are DIRE

 

Nice places if you can get a B&B off the main routes

Under no circumstances try and drive there on a holiday weekend - the M5 is solid from Bristol south and the A30 can be unbelievable

 

You can get to a lot of places by train and there are good local bus and ferry services in summer

I like Cornwall. St. Ives, Falmouth, the coastline around St. Austell (St. Austell itself is a bit of a dump).

 

Newquay is Blackpool with surfers in the town centre, but there are lots of little coves and the odd National Trust beach either side of the commercialised bit.

 

The drive is ok as long as you don't mind setting off at about 4am or something. The mad bit is when you get to Exeter, the end of the motorway network & last services and realise you've still got 100 miles to go.

The Scily Isles are worth a look if you fancy a quiet day trip. There's a bloke who sails around the isles a few times a day which is quite fun (alot of seals swim alongside).

 

Truro is worth a visit, there's a fantastic little place called Charlotte's tea rooms where they make the best ice cream sundaes. Deffo deserves a look if you're looking for somewhere decent for lunch.

 

Going there myself next week for 10 days, it's a lovely place for walks.

Fifteen is well worth a visit. Perched just above the beach on a pretty dramatic bit of coast. Food was great, and the waitresses look like they've just fallen out of an Abecrombie catalogue - all sunkissed and healthy looking. Casual as well which is nice.

Having googled a few of these locations they certainly look worth a visit, particularly Devon. Just have to decide whether several hotels along a set route may be best or whether a campervan would be a better option.

Whereabouts Southern? I used to live in Exmouth, which is near Exeter. All I'll say is you had better be saving up for the council tax and rent if you're moving to that part of the county. Dorset is lovely, and I got married there, but avoid staying in Chard-the natives are fucking mental.

It'll be somewhere near Tiverton, Cullompton, Exeter. That neck of the woods.

 

To be honest I'm used to paying stupid council tax as I'm in the "posh" part of Bristol at the moment. The rent is actually cheaper down there than here though which is a bonus.

Tiverton and Cullumpton are more places where they like playing banjos and give their sisters a certain look . A good friend of mine was with someone from Tiverton, and he had that inbred look about him.

 

Don't get in any trouble in nightclubs in Exter-they might be Marines, or recruits.

Exeter is OK, misses the mark as a city, Exmouth is not as bad as it used to be with the squaddies, infact its a good night out.

Sidmouth where I live is an aged town with many retired folk, the villages of Branscombe and Beer are near by and are fabulous.

I have lived in Devon for many years now and I love it the countryside is cracking and its as safe as anywhere in the UK nowadays.
