manc-mag 1
Tbh we have bigger problems than Green in goal. Those things happen but we should have had enough to go on and win the game regardless. But when you have two wingers that are unable to deliver a decent ball into the box and a clown like Heskey (Carroll would have been a better option than him ffs) up front, we don't have a fucking hope of beating anyone decent. We desperately need to get Joe Cole and Crouch playing for the rest of the tournament. Heskey was our best player fwiw. I think Joe Cole has to be worth the start next time out though. He was average, and should've definitely scored. Glen Johnson was tremendous by far our best on the night I thought. Heskey doesnt score though, which was partly my point (in a backhanded kind of way). I'd have had Johnson a close second for Motm. Credit for making the most out of half chances too, which you can't over emphasise the importance of at this level. Rooney was non-existent. Obviously I hope he steps up but I'd appreciate the likes of Shearer (worst offender) stop mentioning him in the same sentences as Messi. Shearer was interviewing him on 5Live yesterday. In one of his questions he mentioned that he was "one of, if not the best player in the world". I thought Heskey had a good game last night an'all, and I just can't get my head round Milner starting games at the World Cup. I have to just disregard a lot of what he says on international coverage now tbh. I don't think he even bothers contemplating opposition strengths in any serious way, he's just there in England fan mode. Like Ian Wright only less exciteable. LeazesMag 0
Performance more disappointing than the result: disjointed & scrappy, too much giving the ball away (the cardinal sin at international level) and still using the 'lump it up to the big man' option far too much instead of playing through sides. Have we learnt nothing in the last 20 years? Questions need asking of Capello: SWP on the left? Twice he went round in a little circle to get back onto his right when a left footer would have first-timed it. Are Milner and Wright-Phillips both better choices on the left than Joe Cole (arguably our best player in last two tournaments)? King: this nurse him through on swimming and exercise bike routine has kept him fit for precisely 45 mins. Was it wise to bring him when Rio had been so shaky on fitness all season? Our choices are now Carragher (slow, old and would rather be in liverpool), Upson (turning circle of an atlantic liner) and Dawson (went to school with a mate of mine). I'd go with the form player who is Dawson. Likewise, I'd go with the for keeper, Hart. But Green needs to be handled carefully to avoid shattering his confidence Scott-Carson-stylee (His fuck-up looked v similar to Carson's, except he didn't have the excuse that it was pissing down). Is it being overly optimistic to think everything will click once the workmanlike Gareth Barry comes back? Telling when the commentator started making excuses for Capello ie first tournament etc. Not saying he isn't a good manager because he is, but the fact is the usual hype around England rebounded on them again. People predicted easy wins last night, it was never going to be like that. I don't think he should drop Green, he was number 1 and one mistake however costly shouldn't change that, if he does how can he ever select him and give him confidence again ? Heskey should never have been in the squad in the first place. Has his gamble with Ledley Kings fitness came back to haunt him ? Carragher played well in the 2nd half, but an injury or another yellow card for him leaves England short of central defenders. Is Dawson the only one left to play with Terry ? Having said all that, most World Cup winners start slowly, England were poor in the first game against Uruguay in 1966 but won every game after that and it wasn't until they beat Argentina in the quarter finals that anybody believed it was possible Speaking of Argentina, lots of people had reservations about Maradona as a manager but as Alan Shearer said the players are playing for him and he is getting a response. Thats what you want from your manager. Players playing with belief and desire win games, not tactics. Argentina could win this cup. They have the attacking talent to do it. LeazesMag 0
Green made a mistake - but it was the only thing he did do wrong all game - saved us big time when Carragher was skinned. He just about tipped it onto the inside of his near post, it wasn't the world class save ITV would lead you to believe. scuffed shot and scruffy save but it would have done him the world of good after his howler. ewerk 31221
Carragher played well in the 2nd half Eh? He was absolutely skinned just before Green was forced to make that save, if England come up against a team with real attacking quality then you're fucked in Carragher is playing CB. Was an odd one and I'd have started with Crouch as I think the majority probably would have. Not that he's a world beater but he's in scoring form and (hindsight) I think USA dealt with a lot of the ball in the air pretty comfortably. The counter argument with Crouch (to have him as sub) is that he's a good one to bring on when we're playing shit as you can just lump it up to him and you can score a goal out of chaos rather than having to craft anything. Although, as you say, they have an embarrassment of riches in attacking options.

On another day they may have conceded a goal but also on another day they would have scored 6. The players they have could win this tournament, and yes it is players that win games. manc-mag 1
You're the biggest obsessive on here man so it was fair comment. I think you're struggling with very basic constructs of English though so I'm more than happy to leave it there as you suggest. Like I said, that was the only point I was making to start with so it doesnt warrant one of your trademark 10 pagers anyway.

Park Life 71
You're never going to have an easy time of it supporting England so this was to be expected! Not a bad performance all round, just not good either. Problem is the two best chances fell to Heskey and Wright-Phillips. Does anyone know how the hell Wright-Phillips got into the squad ahead of Johnson and Walcott! People say Walcott has no footballing brain but Phillips is the definition of headless chicken, gives the ball away, runs up blind alleys and no composure or thought whatsoever. And Heskey cannot finish. Its a shame because i actually thought he was arguably man of the match and he'd set up our goal, but he will always miss chances like that and come quarters and semis you win or lose on the one chance a striker gets, he won't score it. Heskey had a good game and started as I predicted (and was laughed at ), created the goal and was a general nuisance. The thing is in front of goal he just freezes and hits it (normally straight at keeper or over the bar). I would continue with Rooney and Heskey, but bring on Defoe who can score from abywhere and in strange ways rather than the almost stationary Crouch. Johonson had a good game and Cole didn't make enought forward runs for me, but that might have been tactical. This result isn't any kind of indicator how England will do, still expect big things, teams like Italy can play through a whole tournament like this and under Capello we might have learnt how to as well. MOM Gerrard. Edited June 13, 2010 by Park Life

Barney 0
Saw the 5/1 price on their World Cup portion. They didn't name the bookies. I see lots of talk of English men as MOTM. Has to be either Gooch or Bradley for me though. Had Heskey scored, he'd have been in with a shout.
