sammynb 3517
They played Australia in a friendly last Saturday and although they won 3-1, it was the battle of two fucking woeful teams. If England is to do well this WC finals and I think they will, they will batter the Yanks leaving them looking like a plaster's radio. 2 teams in the world cup in a friendly a week before the tournament starts I wouldnt be reading too much into the performances if I were you Two teams that had already played a friendly the week before in South Africa while the rest of the world was still travelling - makes me read more into it than you're giving it credit. ewerk 31222
Right old battle of the threads goin on here innit Stevie? This is the match thread. You can imagine the yank press making this in to 1854 or whenever it was when those mugs got their independence, they always seem to forget it was English v English in essence, so no they didn't win, same as they didn't win the Vietnam War, and never win any war without our help. More like 1950, but whatever. I'm not one to split hairs. Only yanks count that one, we hit the post 7 times apparently. The people at the end of the telegram line thought there was a mistake in the message they thought it was USA 1 England 10, and a one had been missing off. We could've given the Italians a run for their money for arrogance back then. Right. The Yank press is making it into that, instead of 1854(?). That was my point. I generally disregard sporting results that didn't take place in my lifetime as precursors for results. Can't wait for the match Saturday. I think Stevie was suggesting that the USA won independence from Britain in 1854 Was it not then? Forgive me, 1854 was in my head for some reason, but we only learn the history of areas of the world which are interesting like the Roman Empire. I remember the Peanut Farmer visiting Washington as part of the Bicentenial celebraions in 1976. But I am an old fart Ah right 1876 it was my mistake. Was only 22 years out. Cid_MCDP 0
Shouldn't take them too lightly, 19 of their squad are on the books of overseas clubs.8 with English clubs. 2 with a Scottish club. 3 with German clubs. 2 with Mexican clubs 1 with Italian club 1 with French club 1 with Norwegian club 1 with Danish club. only 3 are with Yankee clubs, Donavon who plays for the LA Galaxy being one of them. Not being funny Noelie, but The Gooch is the yank in Italy and despite being noble hasn't really done anything. Also, I wouldn't be wholly impressed by an American plying his trade in 4 of the leagues you mention. He missed (nearly) the entire season with a knee injury. More classic knowledge from The Fish I'd miss him if he didn't post. Mind Gooch is shite though. Tbh though, we don't really have any standout defensemen on our backline. They don't work badly as a unit, but individually, none of them are anything to write home about. Wouldn't go so far as to call him shite though. He's quite good at defending against corners and crosses where he can use his height to his advantage, although does have a tendency to ball watch when the action is close up. Warmongers, tbh.

Like I said, other than being noble and offering to play for nowt for a year, Gooch has done nothing... but carry on being obsessed fella, it defines you. Guest alex
Glad in a way because Fifa expect (and hope for) England fans to turn up and bankroll the tournament no matter where it's held. How times have changed, eh?
acrossthepond 878
The US press have been giving it pretty big as of late and they reckon they have a chance on Saturday. I think they are in for a pretty significant shock and I think we will defeat them soundly - and this coming from someone who doesn't rate England's chances in this year's WC highly at all. Like other countries where the majority of their squads play abroad, the USA have significant cohesion problems and are prone to a lot of individualism. They don't work particularly well as a unit, have no reliable strikers, and I think all the signs are there for a collapse. If the other teams in our group were halfway decent - South Korea, Cameroon, that sort of level - I'd doubt USA's qualification chances, but as it is I think they'll manage to beat both Algeria and Slovenia. LeazesMag 0
England have always gone into these first games hyped up and have came a cropper far too many times to be complacent about anything. I still think they give the ball away far too easily but Rooney is a match winner. I'm not really doing anything other than taking a game at a time. ewerk 31222
I reckon 3-1 England, with the USA not causing many problems. Also, PP are refunding all losing first/last goal scorer, correct score and scorecast bets if Rooney scores at any time during the match. Not a bad offer. brummiemag1 0
I think we are favourites but the USA are not a bad team and surely they represent good value at 5 or even 6 to 1 for the win?

The Fish 10972
To be fair, it's always worth betting against England, if for no other reason than it's definitely not worth betting on them.
Cid_MCDP 0
On the eve of our momentous match, I'd just like to say good luck, may the best team win, and all that. Win or lose, I really hope that the result is decided by the players on the pitch and not the refs. That's the only thing that could ruin this match for me tomorrow.
