PC slowing down

it seems to have slowed down since I updated my avast to the new version with new firewalls etc. I also have the free googlepack version of spyware doctor, and turned off the immunisation on it in case it was clashing with the new version of avast. It doesn't appear to have made much difference, if any.

Is this normal ? I have ran a complete virus check and the PC is clean as a whistle.

First download something like CCleaner (google it), and clear out anything it tells you to. Then leave it on over night while it runs a defrag (it will probably take a while). You should begin to notice an improved performance after that. Might also be worth having a little spring clean. Look through your add/remove programs list in the Control Panel and uninstall anything you don't use. You could also try deleting some old documents/pictures/music e.t.c.

Not sure why there has been a sudden change in performance, mind.

Ta mate. I was thinking of doing smoething like this, it tells me it doesn't need a defrag but I'll do it anyway. Its not massively slower, but I can tell it is not so quickas it was.

I'm not too keen on doing a system cleanup though (the one in windows that you suggested earlier), I did that once and something stopped working....

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Just download that. Will tell you what it is deleting. Will just be things like your temporary files that aren't particularly needed for anything. (the 'C' in 'ccleaner' is for 'crap', heh)

Doing a defrag is always worth it. Just tidies everything up, as it were..

Try disabling Avast, if it speeds you system try a non sh*t AV.

If its not avast you will need to stop some of the naff programs you have from running all the time in the background.

Goto > start > run/search and type "msconfig" > on Services Tab check hide Microsoft services and untick the programs you dont use, and on the Startup tab untick the programs you dont use. > Then click OK and reboot.

Anything you disable can be re-enabled via the msconfig utility.

if you use Outlook Express for your mail do File -Folder-Compact all folders -

it's amazing how much space they manage to stuff in there

Just did a defrag. It took less than 5 minutes :icon_lol: Also, it is quicker again since I turned the Spyware doctor immunisation off, and the intelliguard to limited, although I'm still running the avast shield and full virus protection.

Its sounds a daft one but have you tried hoovering the fan covers? Its amazing how much dust and stuff accumulates around them and a quick blast with the nozzle will help cool the machine and increase performance.

How much hard drive space you got free on your system drive?

I'm using 44 gigs out of 80.

Could do with more RAM, the PC is 5 years old but its fast enough for me, or was. But its poss almost back to how it was since I disabled the spydoctor shield and left the avast on its own.

Perhaps it's copying it's owner :icon_lol:

or reflecting your age

I don't get it? Why would that mean it would be slowing down? You really are going mental!

  • 4 weeks later...

it is now not booting up. It stalls, I've managed to actually boot it up this one time after numerous attempts. I've been away for the weekend and thought daughter had messed it up or got a virus but now know something is wrong.

Any ideas ? Is it a data transfer problem, or some sort of hardware failure ?
