EDL March

I heard there is one on tomorrow in Newcastle anyone going to shout abuse at the cockneys?

My mate texted me about this when I was down there. Too hungover to have a look, free drink at work from 1pm onwards yesterday, and a three hour train journey getting in at 1030, I'm not in the best of states. What times it start. I don't support them or anything would just be interesting to see a few rows as there's sure to be a counter march of some sort.

Thank you all for your patience in waiting for this information, as you all know this Saturday the English Defence League will be holding a peaceful demonstration to oppose militant Islam in Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle is a vibrant visitors destination with a great nightlife which is united with Gateshead by 7 bridges across the Tyne, along a spectacular riverscape, one of the famous being the millennium bridge the world’s first and only tilting bridge, and we cannot forget it being home of the famous ‘Toon’, Newcastle United fc.

The muster point for coaches and mini buses will be at Washington services northbound on the a1m, we expect everybody to arrive there for no latter than 11:00am, if anyone does arrive late, don’t worry we will have police there till 12:00pm to bring you in, but try your hardest so we can arrive into Newcastle city centre as a convoy, when you arrive in the ‘toon’, the coaches and minibuses will be parked, if you are arriving by car, there will be many car parks around the city centre available to you, I suggest the one closest to the train station, from there you will be escorted to 3 public houses in close proximity of each other on Bewick rd where you can enjoy some light refreshments.

The march will then start, we have to leave Bewick rd no later than 13:45 so please make sure you have drunk up and used the facilities if needed, we will march through the main part of the city centre towards the demo point, once everyone has congregated at demo point we will be hosted by Alan Lake who will be introducing the speeches, we also have one of our members ‘Anglo Saxon’ performing some of his songs, once this part of the demo is over, we will be continuing our march through the city centre, we will then split into two, one group of Edl members going back to the coach park, and the other going to the train station, everyone who has arrived by car join the train station group.

Northumbria police have been very fair and accepting of us, we have negotiated terms in the memorandum we were presented to make this a more enjoyable day for our members, their strategy is light policing, they’re not going to be kettling us in anywhere, we won’t be faced by riot shields and batons, we will be treated as adults, as we deserve to be, from this we have to show the same respect back they have shown us, Newcastle is a city of peace, they encourage all in their city to join in seeking to build a city for peace and inclusion and rejecting intolerance, prejudice and divisiveness, the police have called the operation for this Saturdays events operation dunadry named after a tree in Northern Ireland that represents peace and unity.

Our stewards and Northumbria police will be working side by side to make sure that anyone that is trying to disrupt our march will be ejected from it, racist chants and slurs will not be accepted and anyone found being abusive to our stewards, members or to the police will be dealt with accordingly, this demonstration is for members of the English defence League, if you find anyone who does not fit the bill of a true Edl patriot, please inform a steward so we can remove them from the march or demo, we don’t want infiltrators ruining this great day, drive safe and god bless, see you in Newcastle, No Surrender!!

So they're going to congregate in 3 pubs in Gateshead for nearly two hours before the march? Not just any part of Gateshead but right on the side of the Jewish area.

Well this should be fun :icon_lol:

Meanwhile the Anti-Facists have the following:

DEFEND NEWCASTLE'S MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY!

We, the undersigned, completely oppose plans by the racist English Defence League to hold an anti-Muslim protest in Newcastle on Saturday 29th May.

The EDL is a group of racists and football hooligans with close links to the fascist British National Party. When the EDL came to Manchester in October, Muslim graves were desecrated. When the EDL came to Stoke-on-Trent in January, the words "Islam scum" and "EDL" were daubed on a local mosque.

Islamophobia - bigotry against Muslims - is as unacceptable as any other form of racism. Its aim is to divide us by making scapegoats of one community, as the Nazis did with the Jews in the 1930's.

Today they threaten mosques, tomorrow it could be a synagogue, temple or church. Today they threaten Muslims, tomorrow it could be Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, black, Asian or Eastern European people, travellers or lesbian, gay and transgender people.

We have beaten fascists and racists before by standing up in unity against them. We cannot stand by and let these racists attack any section of our community.

Let's gather in such large numbers that we make it clear to these racist and fascist thugs that they are not welcome here. Let's protest against the racists and fascists, oppose their politics of hatred and defend Newcastle's diverse and united community.

We call on everyone to support and attend the Unity protest against the EDL in Newcastle on Saturday 29th May, meet 12.00 noon at Barrack Road.

Signatories of the statement so far include: Councillor David Faulkner, Deputy Leader, Newcastle City Council; Councillor Dipu Ahad; Gateshead Local Government UNISON; Stan Herschel, Regional Secretary RMT; Dave Hopper Regional General Secretary, National Union Of Mineworkers; Show Racism The Red Card; Bob Murdoch, Branch Secretary, Tyneside Engineering Branch, Unite the Union.

Oh fuuuuuuuuuuck, think I'll give town a miss today :icon_lol:

One thing that stands out in this is the difference in the wording used, I have no doubt that the EDL are highly populated by racists and thugs thats not in doubt however what is clear is that they have organised a proper, police agreed march. Something that their democratic rights allow them. The AFL however have not and merely call for people to descend on Newcastle and disrupt things.

Their motives may be morally right however there are, no doubt many troublemakers within that group too. Any bother that now happens in our city is most likely to be the fault of the AFL not the EDL.

EDIT: Surely the EDL mean Bewick Street not Road?

That Bewick Road has to be a mistake. It says congregating around the Central Station bars in the paper. Also without sounding like Danny Dyer here, heard a few things which suggest NG are having it with the SBC today in the toon as an aside to this it's going to be mayhem.

The Press Association;

Rival groups march through city

(UKPA) – 12 minutes ago

Police have intervened to prevent disorder as members of the English Defence League (EDL) were confronted by Unite Against Fascism (UAF) during police-approved rival marches through Newcastle city centre.

But two hours before they started, a large confrontation between the groups was averted as police stepped in.

Anti-racist campaigners ran up to a gathering of EDL supporters, chanting: "Off our streets, Nazi scum."

Hundreds of police officers, from at least five forces including the Metropolitan Police and the Police Service of Northern Ireland, were on the streets, and spotters took photographs of the protesters to gather evidence ahead of any serious disorder later.

Members of the EDL chanted: "No surrender to the Taliban." Among them were two boys aged around seven, with England flags draped over their shoulders.

Despite police reassurances that city life would continue as normal, some pubs near the march routes elected to close.

One of the EDL leaders, Ronnie Burgess, a 31-year-old bodyguard from Liverpool, insisted it was not a racist group.

"We don't want sharia law in the UK being forced upon our people. We are not against Muslims. The message has been lost and we have got a bad press lately."

Weyman Bennett, joint national secretary of UAF, said 1,000 protesters were out against the EDL. "They have come to try to divide black and white, Muslim and Christian. We are going through an economic crisis like in the 1930s, we don't want the same diseases we had then, of fascism and racism."

Lines of police kept the two sides apart, with horses and dogs in the middle of the 150m gap between the demonstrations. Northumbria Police said there had been no arrests as the two marches moved through the city.

Never seen as many fuckwits in one place at one time. There was more police in town than a derby day. Most of the EDL seemed southern and were just racist scum.
