It's a cliche, but World Cup football really is the toughest level of football going. Not that it's nice to see that proven so emphatically after 'only' playing the Yanks and Algeria, mind. I actually agree in a way with this. John Barnes was the same, people asked why he didn't play for England like he played for Liverpool, and the answer was he was just the type of player who excelled in a team that was already dominant and played the ball to him a lot.
