Bono's back surgery puts U2 dates in jeopardy

U2's lead singer Bono has had emergency spinal surgery after suffering an injury while preparing for tour dates.

The 50-year-old musician was treated at a specialist neurosurgery clinic in Munich and is expected to stay there for a number of days.

He will then return to his home in Ireland to recuperate further, a spokesman said.

The band's next tour date in the US on 3 June has been postponed, while their Glastonbury appearance may be in doubt.

Further information about the possible impact on other tour dates would be announced in due course, a statement on the band's website added.

The Irish rock band was due to perform a string of gigs across North America, returning to Europe in August.

They were due to begin rehearsals on Tuesday for the opening date in Salt Lake City, and are scheduled to headline the Glastonbury Festival on 25 June.

U2 manager Paul McGuinness said of the tour: "We will make plans to reinstate the dates as soon as possible."

He added it was "unfortunate that we're inconveniencing fans" and that it was causing disruption to the band's 400-strong crew.

He advised fans to continue monitoring the U2 website for further news.

The 360 Degree tour earned the band around $109m (£75.3m) in 2009, making it the world's most profitable of the year, according to figures from Billboard magazine.

Career-threatening with any luck.

Imagine a whole U2 tour being cancelled. Tens of thousands of zombies wandering the streets of every major city looking for something dull to watch. :D

Because they still haven't found what they are looking for ?

I'll get my coat......

Wow there is some anti-U2 feeling on this board.

Whilst I recognise Bono is a prize cock I thought that it was a real coup for Glasto to have got them to play. Shame if they are replaced by a festival circuit regular.

Coldplay rumoured to be getting U2's Glasonbury spot, from bad to worse

On the other hand....

Led Zeppelin never played Glastonbury and have only played one date in the last 22 years - at the O2 in London in 2007.

Asked on BBC 6 Music whether he would rule out the possibility of filling in for U2, guitarist Jimmy Page replied: "I never ruled anything out in the future, from the O2."

Singer Robert Plant may be more difficult to convince.

I might kill for a ticket if that happens.

Damon Albarn's virtual pop band Gorillaz are to replace U2 at the Glastonbury Festival next month.

The announcement comes a day after the Irish band were forced to pull out following Bono's back surgery.

Organiser Michael Eavis promised "a massive audio visual spectacle which will really ignite the Pyramid Stage".

It got dropped after the Pope lent his to his brother, who then bought a few rent boys.

They should have been replaced by Iron Maiden. Or The Specials. Gorillaz are OK though, but will Damon Allbran be on stage, or will it be some sort of hologram, cartoon sort of thing?
