Rob W 0
Next Gen anti-ship missiles would make a mess of the whole carrier group in about half an hour. There is no def against water skimming suprsonic missiles. The N Koreans don't have the latest Chinese kit which is BALLISTIC IRBM stuff sea skimming is dealt with by Gatling guns, Goalkeeper, short range missiles (hell even the RN has had Sea Wolf for over 30 years.............) Billy Castell 0
Thing is, North Korea could blow up Seoul and get lucky with destroying an American carrier. However, the US would then use more carriers etc., whilst China would probably give the bare minimum support to the North, possibly as little as some food and a few words at the UN. China acts in its own interest, and a war with the USA is the last thing it would want. If it came to a choice to a few million refugees and conflict with their biggest customer, then China would opt for the former.

Ken 119
Hmmm - never really proven themselves in action - earlier versions knocked an Israeli gunboat about a bit but since then not any serious use The Yanks will never sail very close to the coast so you have to deliver them with ships (suicide mission against a US Carrier Group), by air (ditto) or by submarine - and I don't think Chinese submarines are very good either Even if you do get close the AEGIS systems backed up with close in anti missile guns and missiles will probably splash them N Korea has two great advantages in all this Firstly Seoul is only 36km from the border and long range artillery could devastate the place if the balloon goes up, secondly the last thing the Chinese want is millions of refugees swarming over the border Aye, as I alluded to in an earlier post in this thread. Not sure what missiles/weaponry you are thinking of here but this Dong Feng anti-ship ballistic missile sounds the real deal. US military strategists admit to its lethality and the fact US carriers would be helpless against them, even under the umbrella of their AEGIS ships which I've read in other articles. Note the date of this article, before NK upped the ante in the region; click here Chinese operated only - and mainly hidden well inside China itself. if they use one against a US Carrier all bets are off China have a base closer to their south-eastern border operating, obviously with Taiwan and the sea surrounding her as their interests there (China claim ownership to it all). But they also have mobile launching applications. Nobody knows if these missiles, the newer versions that is, are in service. Some claim they have been in operation now for two years, while others think it'll take another few years. You won't get that sort of information from the PLA, only what it is capable of; and that is that it has a longer range than that of attack aircraft taking off from the deck of a carrier, the missiles are able to manouvre midflight and change trajectory which makes the pac-3 missile defence system of the US obsolete, they are precession-guided and are able to hit moving targets, and if you stick an electromagnetic jammer into each of those missiles launched you are stuck with fire and hope methods to take them down. I agree though, China wouldn't trust NK with them. One would assume that they are a deterrence-only weapon for China (although you can't trust what the intentions of the PLA are for the future), whereas NK would probably try and blow up a few SK ships in order to stir up more nationalism and keep safe the future of the regime and the crazy man's kid who'll be taking over the reigns soon. Rob W 0
Wikiliks has the words of Mr Lee (currently "Minister Mentor" of Singapore of course "the leaders of N Korea are psychopathic types, with a flabby old chap as leader, who prances around stadiums seeking adulation..... the next leader may not have the either the gumption or bile of his father and grandfather. He may not be prepared to see his people die like flies.....tho' China would rather N Korea did not have nukes, it would prefer -even if Japan goes nuclear in response - a nuclear N Korea on its border than an American presence there" Wise words IMHO
