The Olympic and Paralympic mascots.

To steal a comment from the Grauniad website: "Is Matt Groening on our Olympics committee? First the 2012 logo looks like Lisa Simpson giving head to Bart, and now we have Kodos & Kang as our mascots?"

Their names, Wenlock and Mandeville, may seem a little odd but stem from the Shropshire village of Much Wenlock, whose 1890 Games inspired the modern Olympics, and Stoke Mandeville Hospital, birthplace of the Paralympics.

The characters are named after the small town of Much Wenlock in Shropshire - which hosted a precursor to the modern Olympic Games in the 19th Century - and the birthplace of the Paralympic Games, Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire.

Isn't the paralympic mascot the one with the really short arms?

It's the one who looks like it's pissed itself.

I suppose Freddy the Flid was never a starter for the name of the paralympics one. My brother-in-law may be in our Judo team for the paralympics, and its a good thing he's blind after seeing them. They look like old fashioned dial telephone recievers made into cartoon characters to me. I like the names, but they look pretty shit.

At least I don't have to wear the costumes at the PR events.

He's bloody good is my brother-in-law. He's onnly started doing it about 8 or 9 months ago. Judo has much more close contact in that the opponents are constantly in contact with each other, and is about manipulating your momentum and weight, and throwing your opponent about. It translates better than say boxing, where you don't grapple each other and have to be agile and keep on the move.

He's played blind cricket at Lord's too.
