does it also mean we could have told Liverpool to fuck off ?

Dont be silly man, it was one of the best bits of business in years. Even you know who said so.

The irony there is boarderline poetic

to be honest with you, I'd have sold him for that money as well, every player has his price

Selling Andy Carroll for 35m was in isolation a good deal.

What made it less appealing was the way in which the deal was conducted and the just a little bit too convenient timing of it.

What will make it a good deal for the club is if we end up with a better side as a result. It should be very possible for this to happen with additional money from the 35m still remaining, but the reality of it is something that we can only speculate on. It will ultimately show whether it was a good deal for Newcastle United or simply a good deal for the owner.

Just thinking but this Summer really is going to be massive for us and the future and the precendents we set for the coming seasons, as say we dont spend anywhere near the £35 million mark with the money from the Carroll transfer, what will we do with the profits we are scheduled to make in the next seasons were will all that go, surely they should go into building the team? But if the transfer budget we supposedly has doesnt get spent, I dont see the profits we make being put to good use neither

I completely agree that the Carroll sale was good business. I think the vast majority of people do.

Did anyone see him miss the open header against Spurs at the weekend? A 35 million pound striker doesn't miss opportunities like that. Plus he looks to be a bit injury prone.

The crux of it is that we don't have a chairman we can trust to reinvest the funds. If we had a chairman that wasn't a cunt everyone would be excited by the prospect of an off season with £35 million plus to spend in the transfer market.

History suggests we do know that though. Milner, Given, Nzogbia, Martins, Bassong etc. Has the considerable amount of money brought in from these players ever been spent on the squad?

No it doesn't IMO, it went into the pot and went towards the operating costs of the club in the years in question (where we still made huge losses even with those sums received). Different financial landscape at the club now.

The surplus (which we should have) either goes back into the squad or reduces Ashley's exposure, this time there's no need to "cover" operating losses (if we are, in fact, breaking even).

just for the record - weve already spunked a massive chunk of the 35m on tiotes new contract.

if enrique also signs a new contract then there might not be much left......

It might be spun as that but Tiote's improved contract amounts to less than / about the same as the club are now saving due to not having to pay Carroll iirc.

Is the correct answer.

this “£35m good business” for Andy Carroll,

first wasn’t it £30m plus add ons? Which in fairness is a huge amount for any club to offer and shows the commitment of LFC.

the club had been hawking him to spurs et al, for weeks before the transfer deadline, meaning they wanted to cash in their asset.

they knew that LFC were getting the Torres money and were holding out for whatever NUFC want for Carroll + £15m, as this was stated by a LFC director a week before the transfer deadline.

The club knew that once Carroll had broken into the England team they would have to pay him what he was worth, and telling him that he had just signed a 4 year deal for £20k a week and was not getting his rise as promised was as good as telling him to ‘fuck off you mug’.

The £80k a week he’s on at LFC is a lot less than what they were paying Torres and we were paying Owen and others, but now it seems we won’t be paying what the going rate is for quality centre forwards.

We were left with an appalling choice of forwards (but cheap as chips) yet they knew that they were selling Carroll as the negotiations were on going and they didn’t have a back up player — even as a loan signing.

The club gambled on having a thin squad and keeping the senior players playing nearly every game with little to no back up, even when we had long term injuries (but lucky it wasn’t more) they didn’t use the window to re-stock, no they got rid of 2 players instead when we were still in danger of another relegation.

Yeh the huge gamble paid off, we stayed up, ‘good business’ or complete bunch of idiots running the club that got lucky — this time — so far. They still don’t know how to run a football club or employ someone who does and still treat the fans with contempt — and the players too it seems. They’ve admitted to making huge mistakes in the past, yet it hasn’t appeared to change their ways.

oh yeh it’s called “good business” it seems.

With the Carroll money AND monies from TV revenue, season tickets, shirt sales, etc — this summer will tell us once and for all what’s their true club statement, and there’s only so many times you can use incompetence as an excuse.

But will the club see it that way?

We'll see. I disagree on the basis that almost everything that Ashley/Lambias have done since they've been here has been underhand and covered with lies. This makes me distrust everything they say!
