Gemmill 46083
You're a bit fucked either way if you're Webb. Send De Jong off and ruin the WC Final. Leave him on and people will twist that it was a red card. I thought he did ok tbh as a neutral (although he probably couldn't even get a shag in Amsterdam after this), I mean did anyone really want to see Robben sent off for knocking the ball away? NJS 4411
Most of the yellow cards were cheating imo - there were some nasty challenges as well but to talk of red cards is a load of shit - the one that was given was just a typical Spanish diving cunt. Even if you think there was diving, the De Jong is s straight red all day, Van Bommel committed so many fouls you can pick two yellows out of them easy and Robben blatantly kicked the balla way on a yellow, sad way to be sent off but its a red. De Jong possibly - but I'd argue the ball was there and he could have had an eye on it. If Webb had booked Iniesta for his shove on Van Bommel any of his other dives would have meant no goal. There was also a fucking shocker by Fabregas on the edge of the box when they were trying to claim a pen for Xavi. The Dutch were a bit rough but no different to what Stoke or Bolton in the past do to the good teams and its the same whinging. The Spanish on the other had squeal like pigs at the slightest touch and I find it fucking disgraceful.

If its the same one i'm thinking off you could see why they wanted the pen in the split second they saw as he was about to score and was stopped, its only replays that showed he kicked the Dutch players foot meaning it wasn't a pen, so i would have wanted a pen as well at full speed if it were me? And to be fair i absolutely can't stand the likes of Stoke, Bolton (any Allardyce team) etc. they're alot of the reason why football can be shit as they go about spoiling, hoofing long balls and going all out for stregth, power and stamina over skill and craft and football. So i would never want a team like the Dutch who cynically came out with the sole intention of kicking the opposition to stop them playing to win. Also its worse than Bolton as the Dutch can play! I meant the Fabregas dive not the Xavi claim - which I agree as full speed view looked dodgy. I'm not condoning shit teams who do nowt but kick people - I'm just saying that in my view if players do ponce about looking for free kicks at every opportunity then I don't mind seeing them actually getting kicked once in a while. I also think that expecting anything else from the Dutch - who I'm no fan of - was a tad naive given that's how they've played all tournament. I also think people are over-hyping Spain's football - yes they retain possession well but they only score 7 goals for a reason - they don't have enough urgency which I think can be a part of good football. I agree with you on the diving, feigning inury and screaming like girls stuff that is throughout modern football and i do like to see players like that given a good kicking, don't get me wrong! It was utlimately for me the team that played football is better than the spoilers who aimed to kick people and better for the game as well. And i agree abouyt the overhyping as like you say they've hardly banged the goals in and aren't always too urgent, but Spain (though certainly more so Barcelona) are how i want to see football. 10 outfield players all comfortable on the ball, all can pass, great touch and vision etc. I mean you watch them and then think of England's shower of wasters, we don't even play the same sport anymore! Fabregas can't get in their midfield, he'd have been better than all of ours on his own!
TicTacWoe 0
Forlan won the golden ball, very happy with that. Muller got the golden boot and young player of the tournament, Casillas got the best keeper award.
Asprilla 96
Can I just say that Howard Webb isn't fit to ref Crystal Palace v. Hull let alone the WC final. Utterly clueless. I thought he was fine tbf. It was a pretty scrappy match with plenty of diving but he didn't over react or make any howlers, just let it flow the best he could. Craig 6700
I was expecting the Dutch mentality to be to take the game to Spain but instead all they seemed intent on doing was making it as stop-start as possible. They focused on stopping Spain play by whatever means possible rather then playing their own way. Shame like because in the rest of the tournament they showed so much promise. Last time we saw that in a final was 1990 when Argentina tried to kick West Germany off the pitch. Forget what had happened in the tournament before today, all that proved is that both teams were worthy of getting to the final. To decide who wins it was purely and simply about the final itself and an account of what we saw, anything other than a Spanish win would have been a travesty. Can't believe people are having a go at Howard Webb either - he played it firm but fair. Had he played it entirely by the rules he'd have turned it into an absolute farce which would have been no-one's fault but the Dutch.

Fifa dont like that sort of carry on and probably wont have him in another final for a while i reckon.
ewerk 31221
I thought Webb was okay until the last 15 mins. How the fuck did he miss that Dutch corner? That was shocking. And why is the World Cup being carried around in an LV case? Disgraceful commercialism there.

Guest
This 'victory for football' crap is a bit annoying. Yes, Spain have a more attractive passing game and yes, the Dutch gave them a bit of a kicking, but the game I watched saw the Dutch carve just as many clear openings as Spain, and Spain picked up a couple of bookings as well. I think for Holland to go out and try anything other than what they did would have seen them lose by a larger margin. They made it less pretty, but it would have been an effective game plan if Robben didn't lose his bottle in front of goal.
NJS 4411
My opinion of Webb's performance was that it was mixed - you could say one of Stevie's mates with a panic tendency could easily have sent 3 or 4 off but I thought he did well st stand up to the Spanish whingingand his attitude of not sending anyone off until he had to was correct. On the other hand I still think a couple of the cards were iffy - both of Hettinga's for example. The corner late on was almost Poll-eqsue. I don't mind him letting play go on for 40 seconds after Torres went down injured late on, because he had his back to the incident. For him to then pull play back from the Dutch advantage and book whoever it was for the foul but not give a free kick left me totally incredulous. I could understand if Spain took the advantage but he couldn't even be consistent across a single incident.
Guest Gordon McKeag
I thought van Bommel was a disgrace all tournament. He's a cynical dirty player, he'd go out to hurt a player as much as could as long as he gets away with it. I don't think this is a new thing the dutch being dirty, they're usually so good technically you don't automatically think of them as dirty. For me one of the greatest players who ever played the game Bergkamp was a total dirty bastard, he was always leaving his foot in. van Bommel though biggest wanker in the tournament, comes across as supremely arrogant as well. Spain 6/1 for the next tournament in Brazil, England 20's..........

I agree - my semi-defence of the Dutch does include an acceptance that Van Bommel was/is a dirty bastard and I agree about Bergkamp - as i've said before he made one of the worst tackles I've ever seen on Dumas and only got a yellow because "Hey, he's a great player". I can't remember that tackle, but there were many throughout his career. See the key thing is in this tournament is moulding your team. It must be difficult at first having to adjust to playing with new players, which is why many teams take 3 games to settle in. The thing with Spain 6 of their starting 11 play together at Barcelona, I'm not saying it's an unfair advantage, but it definitely is a huge bonus for them, that there's not that much adjusting needing to take place. Sonatine 11564
One of the stars of the 2010 World Cup has announced his shock retirement after a flawless tournament - Paul the Octopus. The psychic cephalopod became a global sensation by correctly predicting the result of every Germany game at the World Cup. He signed off with a perfect eight out of eight record by picking Spain to beat the Netherlands in the final. A spokesman for the German aquarium where he is kept said Paul would: "Go into retirement and do what he likes to do best: play with his handlers and delight children who come to visit him." Paul, who was born in Weymouth but lives at Sea Life in Oberhausen, Germany, became a talisman for gamblers, with bookmakers William Hill claiming the octopus's forecasts cost them £500,000 as punters flocked to follow his advice. Before each match, his keepers would lower a plastic container with two compartments - one for each team - into Paul's tank. A clam was placed into each compartment, and the clam he ate first represented his prediction. He correctly backed Germany to beat Australia, Ghana, England, Argentina and Uruguay, but lose to Serbia and Spain, then nailed the result of the final. A £10 accumulator on all eight results would have won around £2,000. Two years ago, Paul predicted five of Germany's six results at Euro 2008 correctly, but slipped up when picking the Germans to win the final. They lost 1-0. Going out on a high, always a smart move
