Hartlepool hit by Football League points deduction

Gary Liddle

Liddle was suspended after picking up 10 yellow cards

Hartlepool United have been deducted three points and handed a suspended £10,000 fine from the Football League for fielding an ineligible player.

Midfielder Gary Liddle appeared in the 2-0 win against Brighton on 5 April when he should have been serving the first of a two-match suspension.

The deduction leaves Pools a point above the League One relegation zone.

Hartlepool are currently considering appealing the decision, which must occur within 28 days.

Meanwhile, the Football Association has fined the club £3,500 and Liddle has been handed an extra one-game ban, but he will be available for Saturday's final game of the season away to Brentford, with the ban due to start in 14 days.

A statement on the club's website read: "The club and its owners, while fully recognising that we play under two sets of Rules (FA and Football League), are amazed that the club and the player have been tried and punished for the same offence on two different occasions - something that does not even happen under English law.

"The club strongly suggests that the Football League and FA need to review the rules for punishments of all nature and ensure that a double punishment to any club for any offence is prevented in the future."

Exeter and Tranmere, who now lie just one point below Pools in the table, play Huddersfield at home and Stockport away respectively on the final day of the League One season on Saturday.

Whoever is responsible for this at the administrative level should be strung up. They were safe now, they're anything but with one game to go, away to Brentford who are unbeaten in ages iirc. The odds are probably against them staying up, it's unbelievably cruel on the supporters, would this punishment have been 3 points if it was Leeds? I think not.

The word is that Liddel himself said to the caretaker manager that he was on ten yellows but the caretaker said he had no notification about it so played him regardless. Extremely foolish and harsh on their fans, one of which is Jeff Stelling if I'm not mistaken.

In keeping with tradition?
