A PENSIONER has died after a blaze ripped through her bungalow.

 

The woman was killed when flames engulfed her home on Rowantree Road, in Walkerville, Newcastle.

 

Neighbours have told how one resident on the street tried to battle through the fire to reach the 79-year-old but was unable to get to her.

 

Crews from Newcastle East Community Fire Station were called to the scene at around 4pm yesterday but were unable to save the woman, who had lived on the street for more than 40 years.

 

The pensioner, who lived alone and has not been named yet by police, was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

Neighbours on the quiet street were today coming to terms with the tragedy.

 

A 65-year-old man, who asked not to be named, said: “It was horrible.

 

“There were a lot of people out on the street and one lad was trying to get inside. He wasn’t able to get to her. It’s so sad.

 

“She was known on the street – she had lived here for 40-odd years but she was very frail and elderly. She walked with a Zimmer frame and had home help.

 

“I don’t know if she had any family.”

 

Fire crews are yet to establish the cause of the blaze but there are thought to be no suspicious circumstances. The police and fire crews have launched an investigation into the incident.

 

Another neighbour, who also asked not to be named, added: “We were out the back when we heard a commotion.

 

“We came out and there were quite a few people out on the street. We saw the flames coming out the windows, it was really quite frightening.

 

“The fire brigade turned up and then took over. They were here for quite a while.

 

“It’s a real shock. You just don’t expect it. We didn’t know her that well, she wasn’t out the house very much, but if we did see her we would always say hello.”

 

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “At 4.17pm on Tuesday, April 26, police were informed by the Fire & Rescue Service of a fire at a house on Rowantree Road, Newcastle.

 

“The elderly female occupant died as a result of the fire.

 

“A report is being prepared for the coroner. Police and the fire brigade are investigating but there is no suggestion of anyone else being involved.”

I think you need to re-think your sense of humour tbh... nowt 'soft' about anyone risking their own safety to try to help others.

No, but there's a fine line. Consider the amount of people registered on here and it's not unconceivable that any one of us could have lost a friend or relative in a house fire. Aside from that, this incident happened in the region so who's to say it won't directly affect someone?

 

I know you're a young 'un and keen to make a stand, but give it some thought first, eh?

Thatks for this, Upstairs is hard wired so that was ok but downstairs was a dead as a door nail so looks like a trip to the shops for a little square battery for me! Fire in the house is one of my biggest fears, From a very early age I taught my son how to exit the house if there was a fire and He's well aware of what to do. So everyone reading this make sure you have an exit plan too and everyone at home knows it.

Thatks for this, Upstairs is hard wired so that was ok but downstairs was a dead as a door nail so looks like a trip to the shops for a little square battery for me! Fire in the house is one of my biggest fears, From a very early age I taught my son how to exit the house if there was a fire and He's well aware of what to do. So everyone reading this make sure you have an exit plan too and everyone at home knows it.
