If it was £12m I don't think it's as bad as people are making out. I.e. we got him for nowt and peddled him for £6m-ish (shame Ryan Taylor was part of the deal like) and we'll be getting an improve player for a (net) fee of around £6m. I don't actually think it'll happen though.

aye suppose if you balance it out like that it's not so bad, means HBA will definitely slotted in behind the front man if we sign the likes of charlie though

Charlie Z and Barfa could fit in nicely behind a top class striker.

Is he? Genuine question, btw.

Fair point. He's had a decent return is terms of assists / goals since he went there although while that would suggest more consistency I suppose you could argue, going off his performances, that he still lacks consistency but just plays more often.

I've honestly not seen enough of Wigan. He does seem to be their main man, but I thought the season before we signed Duff, he was excellent. Crosses still fired out of the stadium after doing all the hard work, but his drive and directness were a breath of fresh-air.

Maybe all he needed was a change of scenery, or as I think Leazes put it, being made to feel like an important part of the starting 11.

is he good wickham

Dont know much about him other than he's supposed to be the next Shearer!

 so was Chopra.

Answer me this, why did you react to Whickham's possible move to sunderland with shock when, by your own admission, you don't know much about him?

DEADMAN, he's a big strong lad, decent finisher, not sure he's going to reach the heights his hype has suggested. He hasn't really impressed that much in the CCC. According to Wiki he played 37 games last year and scored 8...

I'd take a punt on him, but I wouldn't be aghast if he moved to sunderland.

On Twitter last night it was saying that Sunderland are interested but he looks certain to join Liverpool.

Also Tottenham are supposedly wanting Gyan in any possible move for Crouch

Shirley this Wickham kid would be mad to go to Liverpool? He'd only be second choice striker. Daft, if true.

That's what i was thinking, but why would Liverpool even go in for him, not as though a striker should be there main priority

It'd be daft on both parties if they sign him

Gyan admitted Spurs would be an attractive proposition, adding: "Spurs are a fantastic club and any player would be flattered by their interest, so I am, but there is nothing I can do if Sunderland want to keep me."

Gyan to Spurs?

Barnes looked a quality young talent, shame injuries took their toll.

Out of that lot I think I would only really be happy with Larsson. Although if Faye is anything like he used to (I have no idea tbh), he would be a decent back up.

Latest transfer musings from our man Pards.

ALAN Pardew says Newcastle United expect to make a second breakthrough in the transfer market over the next ten days.

United – who clinched a deal for France midfielder Yohan Cabaye on Friday – have lined up two players and Pardew is confident of making serious progress on at least one by the end of next week.

The United boss returned from a short break on Friday and has been working hard on recruitment in tandem with chairman Derek Llambias and owner Mike Ashley, who is taking a hands-on role in dealings.

United have bids in for four players, and expect to clinch a deal for Swansea left-back Neil Taylor this week. Pardew told The Journal that things were progressing well on the recruitment front.

“Things are definitely moving on now and we expect to be busier between now and the start of the season. We’re working very hard on one or two players and we hope to announce something soon,” he said.

“We should be able to announce a second signing, I would think, in the next ten days.”

The Journal understands the club are closest to clinching a deal for Taylor – who would not be a direct replacement for José Enríque, whose future at the club is in doubt, and will launch a £6million bid for a European-based striker this week.

After missing out on their top target, Kevin Gameiro – who has joined Paris-Saint Germain for an initial fee of 11million (£9.725million), rising to 15million (£13.26million) – a new striker is their priority.

Talks have taken place with West Ham’s Demba Ba, although Fiorentina are also interested in the Senegal striker.

Gameiro’s decision to stay in Ligue 1 is a blow for Newcastle but not one that came out of the blue. The France international was coveted by clubs in Spain, too, and United were aware that it would be tough to get him to St James’ Park. But Pardew says United are right to be ambitious in the transfer market. And he says the club remain open-minded about the legion of players being put to them by agents.

“We aren’t going to rule ourselves out of any situation,” he said. “We want quality players at this football club so if the players are out there and we think we’ve got a chance, we’ll try our very best.

“Some players who we bid for might want Champions League football so they’ll be going there, others will be prepared to come to us because of the magnificent fan base and the history here too. I think the likes of Everton, Sunderland and Bolton are the competitors that we have in this window, but we’ve got a chance because of the Andy Carroll money.”

With negotiations at such a delicate stage, understandably Pardew didn’t want to be drawn on the ongoing Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan contract sagas.

But he is confident that there is now fresh impetus in the transfer market after Jordan Henderson’s £20million switch from Sunderland to Liverpool.

“Things are moving now. There has been a bit of stimulation in the market, with Jordan Henderson going, Phil Jones on his way (from Blackburn to Manchester United) and obviously ourselves signing Yohan Cabaye.

“People are starting to make bids, there’s a lot more action and there will be more happening soon.”
