Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
But I can feel pride in human achievement generally can't I? Actually pride isn't the right word really, acknowledging and being inspired by is probably closer to what I mean. Must I feel shame about all human atrocity? Achievement inspires people, awareness of atrocity aids wisdom. I don't believe in shame or guilt, unless it is my own responsibility. I think I agree actually and maybe my problem is just with the semantics of the word 'pride'. I'm not really opposed to a National day but not overly keen on being based on Old George, especially as it happens in a period already congested with public holidays. Let's have one in June or July I say. There was talk of having a 'Trafalgar Day' in October to help bring our bank hol quota up to some of the other european countries. I bet that would go down well with our french and spanish cousins.

Guest alex
There's not a single Bank Holiday between the end of May and the end of August so it seems daft to stick one in October.

PaddockLad 17649
SCENE I. France. Before Harfleur. Alarum. Enter KING HENRY, EXETER, BEDFORD, GLOUCESTER, and Soldiers, with scaling-ladders KING HENRY V Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our English dead. In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility: But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect; Let pry through the portage of the head Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it As fearfully as doth a galled rock O'erhang and jutty his confounded base, Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean. Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide, Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit To his full height. On, on, you noblest English. Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof! Fathers that, like so many Alexanders, Have in these parts from morn till even fought And sheathed their swords for lack of argument: Dishonour not your mothers; now attest That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you. Be copy now to men of grosser blood, And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman, Whose limbs were made in England, show us here The mettle of your pasture; let us swear That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not; For there is none of you so mean and base, That hath not noble lustre in your eyes. I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, Straining upon the start. The game's afoot: Follow your spirit, and upon this charge Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!' Happy birthday Will old son would he have been Villa or would he have stayed local and wached his football at Highfield Road/The Ricoh? Renton 21998
discovered man Talk about pedantic. The method of producing fire at will was surely an invention was it not? Was the wheel actually an invention as well, considering there are round things in nature?

Guest Barrack Road
I've often said if we had a global anthem for the world to sing, it would be an operatic version of the "if wasn't for the English we'd be krauts".

Guest Barrack Road
Which countries do you think actually like us? ...... Chinese people love us the wealthy ones, they know more about us than they know about yanks. Scandanavian countries love us too. Fuck the rest. Yanks love us I think, probably because we're the only country they could point to on a map. NZ love us as well.

Richie J 0
From my experience, the Malaysian, Philipino and Indian upper classes have a strange reverence for us, and wish they could be as civilised as we must appear to be to them... Obviously the Yanks often have a soft spot for us and wish they could speak like Hugh Grant. Portuguese seem to think that we only send the dreggs of our society to the Algarve, and assume that most of the country are much better behaved, and hence give us a lot of respect. If only they knew...
