Enrique could play for any team in Europe imo, we're lucky to have him, Fat Sam destroyed his confidence, but I always knew he'd come good. If Jonas fucks off I think it's key we get another spanish speaker to play left wing though.

Anyone voting for Smith is a ridiculous lass or on the WU.

Really like Enrique and I think he's comfortably our best player but for player of the year it's a toss-up between him and Nolan and I think Nolan actually just edges it because of his crucial goals. I think ENrique has played better but Nolan has been a little bit more important, if that makes sense.

I'm sure you know what I mean but if you don't c'est la vie.

It's just the way it is with Goalscorers and Goalkeepers when it comes to the naive and their appraisals.

FYP.

and all the professional footballers in the league who voted him their player of the season :icon_lol:

Wonderful point.

However....

The 27-year old former Bolton Wanderers midfielder received the accolade, as a result of being ranked top of the FourFourTwo Top 50 Football League Players which was announced on the night. This made him the highest ranked Championship representative, and as a result, the FourFourTwo Player of the Year for the Coca-Cola Championship.

No doubt I'm sure all of the players, and nobody else jumped onto the following link to submit their votes for someone in another team who they couldn't give two hoots about.

Football League Awards Player of the Year

;)

To top it off, guess who's missing from the available selections for Newcastle? :icon_lol: ....and even Ryan Taylor cracked it for an auto spot!

So, you were saying?

IMO without Enrique we'd still have been promoted, but without Nolan we'd be a playoff contender. Collocini deserves an honourable mention, for playing every game, looking incredibly consistent and throwing his body on the line.

This is definitely a decent point and may well be true. But I'm sure the same thing could be said about any fullback in any team in the world. Their contribution is a lot less easily quantifyable than an attacker or a keeper but that doesn't make it any less valid.

Like I said earlier I wouldn't argue about the inportance of Nolan's contribution (that goes for off the field as well where he seems to be a very important member of the team) but I think his strong finish has clouded people's memory of some absolutely gash performances earlier this year. And to me Enrique's stood out head and shoulders above every other player in the league in terms of performances.

I'm surprised Carroll hasn't been mentioned more. If it isn't going to be Enrique then Carroll should be in contention just as much as Nolan as he has scored only 2 goals less than Nolan despite starting 11 fewer games, also tends not to disappear as much as Nolan has at times whilst having a difficult job leading the line.

Also, who the fuck voted for Alan Smith?

I actually think that one piece of solid graft by Nolan, typified the season for us. It set the tone and demonstrated how hard this seasons team was going to work.

Taken from the .com vs Reading 15th Aug 09...

61 mins Some smart build-up play looked to have come to nothing as the ball was trundling out of play by the corner flag. Nolan showed some quick thinking and reached the ball, laying it back to Barton who laid the ball into Ryan Taylor's path and the cross was a beauty to Ameobi whose header found the far corner again, this time with some purpose. Magic. 2-0

A little puzzled by some of the bickering on this thread!

Well of course you can point the finger (in a good way) in a number of directions. We are champions and like all champions a lot of our players have had very good seasons. Surprised to see Jonas not getting more mentions - frustratingly short of a final ball on occasions (although this has improved greatly as the season had gone on) but he is a crucial outlet. Put simply when he is on those ball hogging, lung bursting runs the opposition haven't got the ball.

Jose is magnificent in many ways but gives the ball away a little too much on the attack if I was being hyper critical (and I really don't want to be). Collo has been great and Guthrie and Carroll have improved hugely. Wonder what Shola would have achieved if fitness had been maintained after that great start. This though is a lot of words to get around to saying "Kevin Nolan".

Yes he does lack pace but he has been a calm head on the ball, brilliant in front of goal and on and off the pitch has been as good a recent choice of skipper as the lamentable Micky Owen was bad.

Agreed. I feel like Nolan actually deserves MOTS and his contribution has been outstanding. Enrique has been our best player in some regards, but as a fullback is never going to contribute as much as an attacking midfielder. Plus, we didn't miss him as much as I thought we would during his injury, I suppose we covered him well though.

I'd like to make an honourable mention to Harper as well for his contribution to our best defence for donkeys. Not one fucker has voted for him though!

Can't believe people are picking Nolan ahead of Enrique tbh. It emphasises Alex hold over the masses on here tbh. It's not even an argument JE has been by a million miles our best player, in many games Nolan has been shite, he was shite in Jan and Feb, and while he's contributed over all with his goals here and there (and hes nee David Platt in that regard), we've been amazin goin forward and defensively down the left mainly due to Enrique. 65% my arse.

TBH I hadn't even noticed what Alex had said about Nolan, I tend not to read his posts on footy chat, as everyone knows he knows nowt about football. ;)

I agree Enrique is hands down our best footballer, but that doesn't make him an automatic choice for player of the season. I reckon Nolan's goals have won more games than anyone else and have been absolutely vital to us securing promotion.

I voted for Enrique as he’s been our best player. To me with the argument for Nolan and his goals, you have to bare in mind how much space was created by both Jonas and Jose with them consistently tying up several of the opposition at a time. Especially before we got Routledge on the right wing. Yes Nolan scored a lot of important goals but he was left frequently unmarked where he shouldn’t have been.

I give Nolan more credit for his team motivating skills than his goals.

Danny Simpson shouldn't even be a poll option, he's been disgracefully bad at this level.

Eh? disgracefully bad? We've conceeded 33 goals all season, nobody in that back four could be disgracefully bad.

He'd be torn apart in the PL, not forgetting that the right side is significantly weak compared to our left, he's a liabilty and a nervous wreck.

A new RB should be prioritised in the upcoming transfer window.

Most of us agree that he's not good enough for the Prem, but he's been plenty good enough for the CCC imo.
