Park Life 71
What's the deal on all this these days. I realise kids aren't allowed to get a slap in school anymore (which is a shame), but apparently the right to give a little slap to your kids is going to be illegal soon...Madness. Crazy if it did anyway. I was hit canny frequently at school anyway and it did me no harm.
NJS 4446
I've always thought an explained, controlled smack is fine for toddlers to teach things like not running out in the road but the idea of adults hitting kids who are above the age of about 8 is basically wrong. Well the only time I ever swore at me dad I was about 7 or 8, I asked him if I could help him in the garden and he said no because it was dangerous with the lawn moor being on, and I called him a fuckin cunt, I don't even know where I got those words from, he smacked me hard and I never did it ever again. I was smacked and I don't think it's a bad thing really but I was very rarely smacked over that sort of age. I think my parents got it right. There shouldn't be legislation for it though ffs. I mean, any excessive smacking / hitting kids should come under existing laws anyway. Similar to the example you give, I don't think it's a bad deterrent to have in a parent's locker, so to speak. And you could just imagine kids threatening to phone the polis if they're going to get hit for doing something wrong.

I can't remember being smacked but my Mam told me I was as a toddler which I guess is where my boundaries come from. I'm in two minds on the law angle - of course kids should have recourse to the authorities if parents go too far but I can see it causing problems as you say - theres a story at the moment about the head of Manchester council stepping down after his step-daughter called the police on him for what sounds like just a slap - though I think she's 16 or 17 so would fall into my general rule I still wouldn't prosecute for that if no real harm was done. JawD 99
Im a fairly new parent (kids 5 months and 2 1/2). I think most smacking comes out of frustration from the parent. Their inability to control a situation. Its generally not the kids fault. I've been there, 4am with a crying kid and all you want to do is go to sleep. Or when you are in a hurry and the kid doesnt co-operate to get ready or whatever. I was smacked more at school than I ever was at home I think my Dad got it right. I was more scared of being told off by him anything else, you used to threaten us with a smack but never really done it. I think I can only remember being hit once. Cant even recall why. I've gave my eldest little taps, for example when he came into the kitchen (my fault for leaving the gate open) and he made a line right for the open (hot) cooker. I had to smack his hand away quickly, but it was my fault really. Roads are my biggest fear, I hold him with a vice like grip when walking near them I dont think I'd ever smack him, not really. I grab his arm and yank him but I'm trying to get to the same as my Dad was with me, where the fear of being told off is enough. We use the counting 1-2-3 system which works wonders. At the moment if I say to him that Im going to start counting, and then go "1" in a stern voice, thats usually enough. I'll be fucked if he ever lets me get to 3 though as I've not worked out what I'll do yet Anyway, I think there is two kinds of smacking. 1. Planned, you smack him a few mins after an event. and 2. You smack him on the spur of the moment. I think both can be needed and equally dangerous, but control is key as mentioned. A few times I have had to take a few deep breaths before telling our son off or reacting.
Park Life 71
The main reason I started this thread is that I was ticked off by Mrs P and a couple of other Germans in the room when I clipped ParkyJnr round the ear cause she was refusing to finish her arithmetic homework which I was helping her with (quite hard some of it )...I patiently explained to them that I would discipline my child as I saw fit and nothing on Gods earth should interfere with that. I didn't realise at the time that it was illegal in Germany.

Renton 22400
It's the guilt complex. They've been overcompensating since Nurenberg. It's true like. One German lass I knew at Uni refused to watch Schindler's list, and when I asked her about it she got massively defensive and bawled that SHE WASN'T RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENED. Erm, yes, I knew that.

The Fish 11068
it's always been my view that a smack around the arse/backs of the legs is a reasonable way of disciplining a child. I wouldn't suppose to tell someone else how to discipline their child, but I couldn't hit a kid around the head, but a smack around the arse/legs hurts just as much as shouldn't cause any lasting problems. luckyluke 2
My dad hit me a couple of times when I was about five or so, I think both times I was being a bit of a twat and deserved it. I remember thinking that for him to hit me I must have been really pushing it so it had quite an effect. Btw I suggested last night that paramedics should have the right to dish out corporal punishment after they brought someone to A & E with a cold. donaldstott 0
I used to get smacked pretty regularly if i was out of line - always by my dad. Probably too regularly if I'm honest, don't think it did my relationship with my dad any good at all. Having said that, it won't stop me using smacking as an ultimate deterrent with my kids though. catmag 337
I remember having the back of my legs smacked by my mam but can't remember what for. It bloody stung like mad and left a handprint so I don't think I did it again - whatever it was! At the moment the bairn is only 13 months old so I've never had to 'discipline' him for anything more than trying to use my mobile phone or slavvering over the tv remote. Whilst I don't think it should be made illegal, smacking is not something I'd advocate or use as a first line of discipline.
