Ashley's pesky meddling and Magooish ineptitude has drained away a great deal of the anticipation and joy we had when we were regularly in Europe and one of the top 5 clubs in the country.

Particularly crushing given the huge surge of optimism engendered following his arrival and, most critically, appointment of Keegan.

I think the fans are a bit heartbroken. And the return to the top flight is the end of the beginning of recovery. But given the history and outlook of BFMA none of us expect things to get truly exciting again any time soon. It's a deepening awareness of what you lost and what you have now will never compare. Unfortunately unlike a relationship with a person, you can't just walk away from the club and forget about it.

Here's to appreciating the good bits of the rest of his tenure.

For me, the board is always this way around this time of year. Obviously not last year because we were going down, but by this point our season is usually effectively over, so we're just in a lull waiting to get to summer and hoping that this time the board (whoever they are) will get it right in terms of transfers. I don't think it's symptomatic of some kind of decline on this board, just the times we're in at the moment.

indeed.

Shame I got so much flak for having to point it out so often to the misguided. Including you it would appear as you hav esaid you are reluctant to get into a dialogue with me for some strange reason when you say you agree with me ........ the question being, have you always agreed with me and if you have why didn't you say so at the time ;)

Except we hadn't finished in the top 5 in the 3 years before we even knew Ashley's name. Our average position was 11th in that time.

Rose tinted specs to say it was a "joy" to watch the teams of Souness or Roeder.

Not that that should get in the way of abusing the fat fuck like.

Leazes,

Those words were deliberately chosen to parody you.

You deserve flak now for being so desperate for credit/vindication, you're worse than Zippy man. Will you ever let it go? What'll your epitaph be, "I told you Freddy was alright"?

I won't engage with you because you're tedious. And still on ignore. Thanks to HF for quoting you.

I'm right though, much as you won't care to admit it.

People like you are tediously unprepared to admit you got it all spectacularly wrong. Why don't you tell me when we are likely to have ambitous owners at the club who sign top players and put the club into the Champions League and even the UEFA/Europa Cup again ?

I expect you will not answer.

I think the downfall isn't so much of being within the forums as the fans in general. Since Ashley fucked things up people are reluctant to celebrate much and see things and achievements not as a means of us being on the up but more that we're clawing our way back to where we were before things were messed up. There's an overall apathy about things because people don't want anything to do with something tainted by Ashley and his scumbag cronies, doom-mongers or not it's reasonable to expect people to be uninterested in a club 'going through the motons' of being a 'mediocre' version of it's previous self.

Of course there are those who are a bit younger perhaps who don't realise the actual size and power that should be this club and have never known anything properly other than us being in the shit (from Souness onwards I should think). Personally I find myself feeling agrieved that we're not up there in the Prem challenging for Europe season in, season out - which incidentally was lost to us before Ashley came along, however the fat man has done nothing other than compact the problems further. Yes we've managed to get rid of some of the deadwood, still Ashley should know he can't take us to the next level now and get out after righting his wrong of getting us relegated - by staying all he'll do is drag out our obscurity in the lower half of the Prem at best. The Ashley era needs writing of a big mistake, a millionaire wannabe football club owner who should never have got anywhere near the sport.

Until we get an owner who's capable of some real financial clout we're going to wallow amongst the nothing teams like the Hulls, Wigans, Birminghams, etc.

Well said.

Out of curiosity, including 1994 how many times have we finished in the top half the premier league and how many times have we finished outside the top half?

highest league positions, and average league position for over 50 years. Thats a fact, and as I keep saying, only 4 clubs had higher.

Never ceases to amaze me the people who still can't bring themselves to admit they didn't appreciate this at the time and continue to find any stick to beat them with that they can find.

I only hope we get back to at least this level asap, and that is looking forwards not backwards however it may be construed. Maybe these people are among those who booed the team for only finishing 5th ?

how thick are you, look at the whole 15 years or don't look at anything..........

as an afterthough, did you EVER think during the years we were playing in the Champions League and europe regularly ie more than anybody but 4 other teams - that we would ever actually get relegated again and celebrate an "embarrassing" promotion again accordingly .........

Course I didn't, but you're having a completely different conversation...as usual.

Ashley didn't drain away any of the "joy we had when we were regularly in Europe and one of the top 5 clubs in the country", Shepherd had already done that with regular mid-table finishes under 3 years of Souness and Roeder. Of course Ashley went on to make it even worse, but that's not what Trophyshy suggested.

Are you saying you enjoyed Shepherd's last 3 years at the club as much as the previous 12?

no. But Notts Forest fans don't dwell too much on Brian Cloughs last season as manager and suggest the rest never happened either do they.

You're cherry picking. Things always change. The point is that they were by far the best we have had in 50 years and are highly unlikely to be matched in the near future either.

Where have I ever suggested the rest never happened you straw man building aad coot? Once again you're ignoring what's being discussed completely to have the same old argument with yourself whereby you imagine a make believe scenario where I wasn't happy to be playing in Europe and proceed to tell me I was wrong to think that way. No matter how much I repeat how happy I was to be playing in Europe the voices in your failing head keep repeating the mantra "top 5 club and no-one else realised" as if you've realised then zen like state of self enlightenment us young whipper-snappers can only hope to reach some day.

BEING TOP 5 AND IN EUROPE REGULARLY WAS BRILLIANT AND WE ALL LOVED IT.

Notts forest don't dwell on Clough too much in the same way I don't dwell on Shepherd too much. There's only one person on this forum who won't let that argument go.

However Clough got them to a couple of cup finals and finished 8th twice in his last 3 years. He hadn't finished outside the top 10 in a decade before relegation (we finished more seasons in the bottom half than we did in the top half in Shepherd's last decade). As soon as he got them relegated he buggered off. It was a rapid decline as alcoholism took it's toll on him. If he'd hung about like a bad smell another couple of years, it probably would have tarnished his reputation even more than relegation did.

Let me ask you, do you blame Frank Clark for Notts Forest not playing in Europe regularly and challenging for the league when he was manager. After all by your logic it couldn't have been Cloghie's fault (despite getting them relegated), his record over 18 years was too good for him to be blamed in any way shape or form.

Does this statement ring true with you....."Frank Clark's pesky meddling and Magooish ineptitude drained away a great deal of the anticipation and joy Forest fans had when they were regularly in Europe and one of the top 5 clubs in the country"?
