THE deaths of 16 pensioners at a South Tyneside care home could be investigated by police.

Northumbria officers are already investigating the death of 81-year-old Joyce Wordingham who was a resident at St Michael's View, in South Shields.

And, as part of the inquiry, detectives are also looking into the circumstances surrounding 15 other deaths at the home.

A probe has been launched into the death of Mrs Wordingham from bronchial pneumonia on February 20.

A 45-year-old woman voluntarily visited South Shields Police Station in relation to the death.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Northumbria Police is investigating the death of an 81-year-old woman at St Michael's View in South Shields, and as part of this process, is looking at the circumstances surrounding 15 other deaths at the home.

"We are working with partners and liaising with the families involved in the review."
