Ashley to allow spending spree in summer

If there's any truth at all in that (and I don't believe Simon Bird peddles much shite), then they've learned fuck all...

Worrying in the sense that they are really only thinking about survival and tight budgets for team upgrading. No vision.

So I'll get in before LM does.

Whats the use in being there? whats the use in existing if all you're going to do is attempt to survive? thats not football, at least not for the fans, its balancing the books. Its making a profit, its all the things that football should not be about. Make no mistake, with that kind of business plan then the only people to profit (in any way shape or form) are the shareholders.

Precisely why I was saying in the 'Next Season' thread that we (as fans) need to be aiming higher than 15th to 17th.

Accepting that will be playing into his mediocre business plan. Not acceptable in my eyes.

Instead a budget of no more than £20million will be provided, plus whatever Hughton makes in sales, with the emphasis on discovering players under 26 who are on the up and eager to make their careers on Tyneside.

Newcastle hope the economic climate will mean bargains can be had from the likes of Portsmouth, West Ham, Hull, and Manchester City, who will sell good fringe players.

so who do we reckon we should be going for, whos under 26 from these clubs??

(oh and cheap as well)

If O'Hara and Hutton are true as rumoured, those would be good buys. And of course I'd like to get Beye back on a 1-year contract.

I'd also want to be looking into these players: Chris Brunt (West Brom), Sigurdsson (Reading), Stephen Fletcher (Burnley), Stephen Hunt (Hull), Kamil Zayatte (Hull), Kevin-Prince Boateng (Portsmouth), Belhadj (Portsmouth), Behrami (West Ham). From either teams that are down or look to be going down, they shouldn't be too extravagant.

I honestly think it must be more fun as a football fan to support say Blyth Spartans or Whitley Bay, teams who have a huge amount of things to aim for and are constantly striving to reach those goals than just ensuring they survive and make a profit. A good cup run for them means paying off some debts so they can buy a new player or two, those players will maybe get them promoted and hopefully get more cash in to clear more debts and buy more players...... Ive been here before though.

What made this season more exciting than any in the last few years is the fact we were pushing for something, fighting to get that promotion. I dont see fighting to avoid relegation as anything like fun.

As a football club owner Id no doubt think differently but as a fan I want us to compete for things not just hope we can spend as little as possible to guranteee staying in the Premiership gravy train.

Agree with all that.

The last thing I want is to spend years scraping around in the lower reaches of the Premier League playing shit football and playing the reserves in cup competitions.

We should be aiming high and that includes trying to play good attacking football (rather than going away from home putting 11 men behind the ball) and competiing seriously in the cup competitions. In my opinion thats what Newcastle should be about and thats what supporting a football club should be about.

When I was a kid and then when I started going to games, it was all about the simple enjoyment - going to new places, meeting up with people, drinking, sometimes the buzz of going somehere dodgy and occasionally the football. As a kid as I was aware that we had a history that suggested at least occasional cup success but I never for one moment expected us to be a "top club" and win the league.

I think Keegan changed that - I know LM will say it was Hall but in 93 I very much doubt that the latter actually thought we would challenge as we did - it was certainly a surprise to me.

I think the disappointment of our "fall" since 2005(ish) is that if we had been able to maintain that level, we'd be well placed with a decent manager (God knows who) to maybe still challenge even in a more frugal environment (see Arsenal). The problem now it that having fallen so far, the only way to get back up to even a Birmingham/Fulham/Villa level would be to spend a lot or hope Hughton does have the ability to build a decent team with nothing over 4 or 5 years (at least). The problem with the latter imo is that despite the denials, I don't think the fans as a whole have the patience for that or the acceptance of our new place in the world.

I know I've been overtly pessimistic about the immediate future but I'm afraid without a "good" sale I can't see much of that simple enjoyment in football happening again.

Or

Like all the other Jouurnalists this week, Simon Bird is speculating with no more facts than the rest of us.

No interviews have been given, there are no quotes about spending plans or ambition from anyone at the club.

It seems as though the self imposed vow of silence is being maintained so that Chris and the players can concentrate on winning the division. (which is good).

It is the next statement of intent that comes out of the top two at the club that will be the make or break one and then and only then will it be time to start contemplating bleak years in the wilderness.

Until then its all pie in the sky

Also begs the question who'd you get from West Ham. Players like Carlton Cole will probably command decent fees and the majority of their side has looked shite all season.

I think Bird is a lot more accurate and balanced than most in general though, wouldn't you agree?

Im sure he is, but its still just his guess and guess is no better educated than Happy Faces, yours or Stevies.

I mean

Ashley will ignore warnings from key figures in the game that investment in the order of £40million will be needed in the summer and another £20million in January.

I've no problem with the purchases geared towards survival this year especially given the purported transfer policy to be under 26 with potential. I'd much prefer a reasoned and reasonable transfer foray than spunking 50% of a modest budget on a wing and a prayer.

I'd hope for £25m-£35m depending on sales. 5-6 players. Striker and creative force in the midfield, Right back. 3 players to fatten out the squad.

I'm afraid it'll be £20m including sales. 3 players. Dodgy Striker and a couple of ageing centre halves.

I really dont get it. There was me thinking our club had imploded and was on the cusp of financial ruin only to be redeemed by a miraculous one season stay in the second tier, prompting hopes of doing what only a few teams manage to do and that is to be promoted and stay promoted.

That must be a parallel universe i'm living in as apparently our proper and rightful ambition for next season is competing with smaller clubs like Villa and Spurs?

The bottom line is that the club can afford to spend 20m over the summer. If they dont, then NUST needs to step up and wrestle the fucking club out of the fat cunts hands. If they do, then we should hope its enough to survive and build further. If that doesnt prove enough, then a judgement needs to be made by the fans about whether more could have been done. I'm hoping one of the lessons learned from January 2009 is not to gamble on our premiership status. This makes me think we will spend 20m (not including wages). I'm prepared (just) to forgive them for thinking that a squad containing Owen, Viduka, Martins, Duff, Beye, Bassong, Barton, Enrique, Colocinni, Jonas even Nolan and Guthrie was good enough to survive. It would be unforgivable to think the current lot have the same chance.

If I was Fat Mike, I wouldn't be that confident that Hughton would spend the money well so I'd be leery about forking over 20 million. Giving Routledge and particularly best three and a half year deals doesn't exactly make me think he has an eye for a player. Least said the better about about even having pancake at the club.

Aye, routledge has been a terrible signing like

:D Sniffer obviously cant smell a good player..... :naughty:

Had to double take reading that myself. Routledge has been a great signing for us this season.

Routledge may be at his level in the championship like a number of our players. He's already shown that he can't cut it in the premier league. Martin O'Neill rolled the dice on him but only gave him an eighteen month contract rather than commit himself to a long term deal and sure enough, he was on his bike. I hope he turns out to be a great player for us and an inspired signing, but I still think three and a half years is a gamble and the difference in thinking between an experienced manager and a novice.

The manager won't have negotiated the contract though so you're blaming the wrong person. Also, if he was given 18 months he'd be free to leave in summer 2011. Canny logic by you there like sniffer.

Sniffer, re the routledge point.

Surely if the wages are realistic, it would be better to have him a 3 year deal so that if he doesn't work out after 18 months you can sell him on.

On a 18 month deal he would just go bosman an no money recouperated.

Ie

there will be plenty of championship teams who would snap him up if we sold him today.

You are clutching at straws.

Explain to me how giving him 18 months would represent good business for the club then oh wise one

Or on a long term contract he can sit around and rake in the cash. It's not like we haven't seen that before.

Hang on a minute. Aren't you making noises about how we should be hanging onto Joey Barton in another thread? Top tucking.
