Yeh it'll be about £600'000 a week - all together he made £31m in 2011 but obviously it wont have all been from Barcelona, most of it will be sponsorships etc etc.

What's he going to spend it on? A trophy cabinet?

I'd love to see Maradona in his prime play in this Barcelona side with more protection from referees. That's no slur on Messi who no doubt is a very special player but cliche or not, Maradona did play in sides nowhere near as good as this Barca one. Careca by the way was nothing special from this addled memory and say what you like about it but I've never seen one man have such an impact on a team winning a World Cup as he did in '86. Spain had so many talented players when they won it in South Africa, you wouldn't say the same about Argentina in 1986.

Maybe it's talking of World class players, but I always loved seeing Romario and Stoichkov at Barcelona, I'm sure they were both in the side that absolutely dry bummed Man Utd in the Nou Camp in one of Man U's first games in the CL. They did them 4-0 and Bruce and Pallister were just given a fucking torrid time all night. Their faces were as red as their shirts and they were blowing out their arses after ten minutes. Was funny to watch at the time. :D

I did some HF-esque statting and can inform everyone that 10% of Messi's goals are where he's chipped the keeper.

Watching his goals video I did think it was perfect for some charting of how many he gets with his left, his right, his head, chipped, outside the box, inside the box, following a dribble, how many men he beat etc.

Couldn't be arsed though

It's something I'd wondered ever since he chipped the keeper twice in the Dortmund game.

A lot of his goals are placed in the exact same part of the net - he's an absolutely lethal finisher. I don't think there's too many players around currently who you'd bank on to score 1-on-1 as often as Messi does.

Not sure about this point Fish is putting across - he scores the odd goal from his head as he gets into positions when a ball is whipped in. The fact is why play a direct game at a club where that simply isn't the philosophy? It's like how Andy Carroll just doesn't work for liverpool - they're using a system that just isn't effective for his style of play.

It's not exactly like Messi has scored 230+ tap-ins, he's just on another planet in terms of ability. You can't compare the two players until Messi's retired from competitive football, even then they both played in very different teams.

The last few World cups have been very poor IMO & although I hate to admit it the Champions League has a far better standard of football.

None of the truly great players would thrive in a team that lumps the ball forward ala Stoke!! & that includes Maradona, Pele, Cruyff, Zidane & Messi these guys are artists, when you watch someone truly special it looks as if they are the big lad in the school yard & the others cannot get near them, you just have to watch Maradonas goal V England in 86 and many of the Messi goals to see that.

Messi's passing is out of this world the amount of times that he splits a defence with a 20 yard pass is unbelievable & they are the hard ones to spot and complete, like I said on an earlier post Maradona had one truly exceptional world cup in 86 and 3 ordinary ones I hope that Messi does the business in a world cup to cement his place as one of the all time greats.

The greatest thing about Messi being so good is that if he weren't around then people would be talking about Ronaldo being one of the greatest ever. Instead he's playing second fiddle to Messi and it must really grate on him.

As I started this thread........its difficult comparing players from different era's, and it's also difficult to compare players depending on who they plays for too.

Those saying Messi wouldn't be so good if he played for a lesser club have a point which may or may not be the case, as compared to Maradona, but George Best was one of the greatest players I've seen and he never played in a World Cup or European Championship.

Maradona was the best of his time and was inspirational, Messi is the best player in the current era too. When Maradona scored that goal against England in 1986, a dirty italian or Argie defender would have chopped him down rather than allow him to go past them they way the England defenders did mind.

I don't really think there's an answer to this one. They were both the best of their time.

Hard to disagree. I think people of a certain generation will always think Maradona was the best regardless of how good someone else is. Messi is sensational and IMO just as much of an achievement to deliver consistently year in year out for a team like Barca, with the pressure / expectation at such a young age, as Maradona reviving a struggling team.

Guardiola has recently said that nothing Messi does on the pitch is for extravagance. Where Ronaldinho would do some incredible flicks or fancy trick passes just for the spectacle, everything Messi does is with the intention of scoring/creating.
