THE party started before kick-off and will not stop until August.

 

Nottingham Forest's inability to beat Cardiff ensured Newcastle's Premier League exile was over before a ball was kicked last night.

 

Perhaps it wasn't the most scintillating way to go up. But after the shambles Toon were in a year ago, it seemed like blissful brilliance.

 

Newcastle have spent 316 days in the Championship. That's a whole 10 months and more to ponder how to right the wrongs of a calamitous, spineless fall from grace last season.

 

And as the Geordie nation celebrated last night, it was Chris Hughton who rightly took the plaudits for leading this once broken club back into the promised land.

 

For a bloke who did not even want the job at the start of the season, Hughton has played an absolute blinder. A super-calm head when it has been needed most.

 

Make no mistake. Next season back among the big boys will not be easy and the former Spurs full-back knows it.

 

Survival is the primary aim. It will be a rocky road with thrills and spills a-plenty for sure. But thanks to quiet man Hughton and his coaching staff, a squad which is hungry for success and ready for the challenge ahead will have a chance to prove the doubters wrong.

 

This time last year the likes of Michael Owen, Oba Martins and Mark Viduka were picking up staggering pay packets yet failing to produce on the pitch.

 

Fast forward to today though and those big-earning prima donnas have been replaced by footballers desperate to haul Newcastle back from the brink.

 

Newcastle are, for once, united.

 

Tyneside has witnessed the rebirth of its beloved club and the Toon Army now have the summer to think of trips to Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and, of course, Sunderland.

 

No one predicted such a cakewalk back into the Premier League. Newcastle were going to be the new Leeds, the latest famous old club to rot away.

 

But it never happened.

 

Instead, Hughton's boys rolled up their sleeves and got on with it.

 

And the fact that they have achieved their target in record time and with five matches still to go is mightily impressive.

 

It hasn't been pretty. Newcastle have not played like world-beaters.

 

Far from it. But, in a division without any, they have not needed to.

 

A steely resolve has been instilled which has seen a club-record 20 clean sheets bagged this season.

 

Toon are the only team in England to boast an unbeaten home record while the likes of Andy Carroll and Peter Lovenkrands have fired in goals with regular aplomb.

 

Of course, Newcastle being Newcastle, all their serenity on the pitch is not totally matched in the boardroom.

 

Owner Mike Ashley will never win over everyone at St James' Park. Some will never forgive him for the bust-up which led to Kevin Keegan's walk-out in 2008 and the meltdown which followed.

 

But the billionaire deserves his slice of the credit as well this morning - no matter what the die-hards say.

 

 

The result did not matter though.

 

Newcastle were back in the Premier League and that is all that counted.

 

The Geordie rollercoaster is up and running once again so hold on to your hats. It's going to be emotional.

Got to say for my first post that it feels canny great to be back in the Premiership.

At least we will get more TV coverage over here on Fox Soccer Channel instead of relying on skanking a link from Sky via the internet or the patchy coverage on BBC iplayer again via the internet.

 

Hope the tour goes ahead in New York, its only a couple of hours flying time from here.

Though I reckon there probably was, given the minibus that Sheffield United brought.

 

I could still see a number of empty seats in our sections. The usual West Stand middle tier ends were virtually empty and as you looked around the ground you could spot empty seats in every bit of the ground.

The attacker leaned on Collo, which put him off. He really shirks against the more aggresive players.
