Stevie and Leazes you really are embarrassing yourselves. If you really believed in this exclusive local identity thing then you'd not cheer on the players who were from outside the area.

I think you should be telling someone who lives in Oz that they are in no position to tell the likes of me [and stevie] about the football club, and it doesn't mean I believe in "exclusive identity thing" anyway. I have lived away from Newcastle for 30 years but it hasn't stopped me from having a season ticket for most of that time.

Success costs money. And NUFC have the support to be bigger than most clubs. Don't attempt to tap it and you are a waste of time. End of.

So shut the fuck up.

How is asking where the money would come from a unacceptable question LM?

What budget for transfers/wages do you think even a maximum level of STs and merchandise + TV Money gives? - I'd guess not enough for survival - maybe £20m.

So where would your money come from?

The alternatives are Ashley speculating which is a fair demand but unlikely and debt.

It looks like a few special cases aside, large debt would not be a possibility. A request for credit in 2010 is infinitely different to a request at anytime under Shepherd. Your suggestion that Ashley or anyone else could simply ask for £50m say is a non-starter. I think large debt being available now is unlikely as it was pre-Hall.

So Man City type purchase aside, maybe the only hope we have for the future is to concentrate on youth development etc - I've certainly accepted that the days of spending millions on players which you seem to suggest is feasible is a non-starter.

This isn't a defence of Ashley btw - I think he either needs to sell up quick or he really does need to speculate to make his money back - the halfway house we're heading for will result in relegation imo but we also have to consider what happens if he does go - a Barry Moat type takeover would just lead us directly to the scenario I describe above.

You imply that our income and or potential should make debt an easy option - as I said if genuine income only adds up to an "average" amount to spend then debt would be the only option.

Of course what I'm happy to see and what I see as reality are two different things - that's why as I said I'm resigned to mediocrity.

NJS raises a very good point about obtaining debt. Leazes may be right when he says that all clubs trying to achieve something have certain levels of debt and that's the way to move forward. But where do we obtain this finance from? The financial world is mess at the minute and when financiers see what's happening at clubs like Portsmouth, they are going to be even less inclinded to make money available. I know we can attract greater revenue than most clubs because of our fanbase but I still don't see us being able to secure the type of money that would be required to start attacking the top six or seven (let alone the top four). Unless Ashley digs very deep (something which no one believes is going to happen) we are going to have to try something different. Which means building slowly with young or unknown foreign players. This will hopefully lead back to the days when we can start thinking about competing for top players once again. Unless Ashley can find someone with a lot of money to offload us on to.

I honestly don't give a toss what you think about me, but if you're stupid enough to think that the English league would be as strong as it is without foreign money then good luck to you.

Try to offer something constructive in your posts for a change, and who knows you might change the common perception you've built for yourself.

That's the end of my comments on this, but if it makes you feel any better feel free to be as racist and xenophobic as you like In your response. :D

What % of the revenue in the Premiership over the last 15 years would you say has been foreign money? Take away foreign ownership which is a separate issue. From "beanie" sales to tv subscriptions, I'm asking you what % you think that would be of total revenue. I don't know the answer to this, but I'm asking you. If it's more than 10% I'd be amazed.

What are you on about you fuckin stupid cunt? In this thread or for a long while I've never even made reference to local identity even though I believe it should be the single fundamental thing at a football club. Why involve me in that with regards to this post you total mug?

You two both go for the "more local than you so I win the argument" line a lot, I can't believe you're going to pretend otherwise. The fact is I support Newcastle Utd and I always will. There are millions like me who pay money to the club via merchandising and Sky subscriptions. If you want to run the club on an income of 52000 x £40 every fortnight then you'll have to get used to watching football that's a lot worse than it is now.

I know you're both pissed off about not being allowed to stay in that B&B but don't take it out on me. :icon_lol:

I am saying that have watched the club play for 45 years and have seen everything at first hand, so I know more than someone who lives on the other side of the world.

Nowt to do with "local". Nowt to do with merchandising either. I'm telling him [and you if you like] how the successful clubs are successful. It's as simple and straightforward as that.

If you prefer to "support" a mediocre club, underachieving through a lack of ambition in the boardroom, then that is your choice but personally if you do I think you are a prize mug. I also think a few years of real mediocrity would sharp change your mind anyway, say for about 10 years of constant relegation fights and the realisation that the Champions League qualification and acquisition of the quality of players who put us there will then quite correctly make even the dumbest fool realise the value of what the old board brought to this football club.

You can always frame the balance sheet or something.

The talk on the radio today was that the next xx years will see the usual trend of the top players playing in Spain, Italy and England stop. Instead China or Booming Russia will attempt to re-create our success over there.

Players will ofcourse follow the way.

This will all follow the example set by the IPL

You seem to be overlooking Leeds and Portsmouth. Both spent big, why aren't they doing better?

We spent hardly anything this season, yet we're going up. How much did we spend on shite before that? You seem to think that I'm saying spending big money is the problem....well I'm not. I'm saying that JUST spending money to dig yourself out of a hole is what we were doing and we'd run out of luck.

I hope for your sake you don't gamble.

Will NEVER happen imo. We have what they never will have, we have a heritage in football which is beyond comparison, certainly our league system. It might not always be the best league, but it always be one of the best, and will always hold a lot of prestige for every young boy in every country who wants to become a professional footballer.

I don't live in Newcastle, I've already said this in this very thread, but I AM a Geordie and I HAVE supported the club for 45 years and had a season ticket for the majority of this time. So I don't live locally, but know about the club because I have supported it first hand.

Is this difficult for you to comprehend

The usual daft remarks about Leeds and Portsmouth.....oh dear. Portsmouth won the FA Cup, don't you wish we had won the FA Cup ? Actually, I know what your reply will be. You are going to say that you would rather not have won the FA Cup aren't you :) A once in a lifetime memory and you are going to say they should have sat back and not tried to put together a team good enough to have won the FA Cup. Incredible.

Instead of Leeds and Portsmouth, I give you every single team in the history of the game that ever won the League title in this country. Every single one of them spent money to do it.

Fuck me. Do you need teaching to suck eggs too.

Edit: Instead of making a profit in every transfer window since Ashley bought the club until the recent one, we may just have stayed up. We may even have qualified for europe if he had backed Kevin Keegan, but never mind, Soopa Mike is wonderful because we have gloriously won promotion [although still way behind the club he bought]
