Rob W 0
lonso: F1 is not about overtaking Friday 2nd April 2010 Fernando Alonso has voiced a rather damning opinion on F1, saying the sport is not about overtaking, rather it's about "technology" and "driving precisely". F1 came in for a harsh bout of criticism in the wake of a boring season-opening Bahrain GP, which saw absolutely no overtaking unless one counts moves off the start line and a couple in the pits. The sport redeemed itself at the next race in Australia, where a bit of the rain in the opening laps paved the way for an action-packed event. However, Alonso reckons that if you want action, F1 is not the sport to follow. "If you want to see overtaking this is not the right place," said the double World Champion. "This is about watching the maximum-performance cars in the world, drivers enjoying racing and risking their lives in the car to put on a good show. "F1 is maybe not the perfect sport to see overtaking, This is about technology, about driving precisely, everything being under control in the garage or the track, in the factory. We are talking about maybe less than millimetres of margin in the cars and engines. "We know in wet conditions we see more enjoyable races for the fans, but this is not the normal thing. He added: "They have been talking about this in F1 for many years. I don't think that in 2003, '04, '05 or '06 we saw much overtaking. "We enjoyed those Championships. Last year was a fantastic Championship and I don't think we saw many overtaking moves. "This is nothing new this year with new rules or no refuelling. I don't think that is making the racing different or affecting the overtaking. "In F1, there has been no overtaking for 20 years so it is not due to new rules. Australia was a great show for everyone, a good race to watch and to enjoy as a driver."
