Moving to Newcastle

Hey All,

Im going to be moving to Hebburn around the end of May, as I have been accepted on a MA course at Newcastle Uni.

Any tips or advice about the area and Newcastle city centre itself? Where's good to go out, areas of local interest I should check out while I'm there, where to avoid etc.

Yeah, I figured as much. Long story short my hands are tied and I'm going to be in Hebburn for at least 6 months-1year, as I can save a fair bit of money.

I don't know that much about living in the North East though so anything is helpful ;)

Out of interest whats not great about Hebburn?

It's a dump basically. There is a Metro though which is good for getting into Town. The Ouseburn is best place for drinking btw.

It does have its dumps but also has quite a bit of nice housing now as well.

I dont live there but taxi there and find the people very good, what you call "salt of the earth.

I would also say I see very little, if any trouble outside the Hebburn watering holes.

The Clock is the Newcastle Pub while the Longship is the Sunderland pub.

As Alex says, it does have a Metro stop which is great for Newcastle and even better for getting to the excellent sea front at South Shields.

The local shops are crap, there is a big Morrisons a mile away in Jarrow.

Most importantly the best / second best fish and chip shop in the North East is based there opposite the clock called Pauls Golden Chippy.

Lots of cracking MILF as well ;)

It's a while since I've been through it but you should be aware that Heburn is pretty much comprised of an "old" town which is a bit rough and a new bit (mainly residential) which in relative terms is quite respectable.

Hebburn. Avoid everything south of the Tyne East of Gateshead it really is all shit, and I'm not being nasty saying that.

It's boring, there's fuck all there, half the people support Sunderland, it really beggars belief that people choose to live there. It's no Mossside though, nothing like that.

What's with all the Hebburn bashing like?!

It's a cracking place to live and a very good little Football town. Loads of Bars are able to show the foreign 3pm Satda matches!

The Longship does have a Sunderland Bar name but it is not - a bus goes to their home matches from there but bar that the majority of drinkers inside it are black and white!

It's only a 15 minute metro jounrey from Central Station!

It is world famous - look at some of the lyrics in songs;

Ooh baby do you know what that's worth?

Ooh Hebburn is a place on earth.

One night in Hebburn, One night in Hebburn, oh one night in Hebburn

Hebburn Must Be Missing An Angel

Baby you're all that I want,

When you're lying here in my arms,

I'm finding it hard to believe,

We're in Hebburn

to erm, name a few ;)

If I was from them places I'd support the team on their side of the river, Sunderland or Gateshead.

Glad Gazza never thought that way though, eh? Or Carroll ;)

Well Felling Bypass and West is acceptable, there should be a sign at that roundabout though at Heworth Metro "Welcome to Sunderland and South Tyneside" just my opinion mind.

Which is riddled with charvas and there's nowhere decent to drink.

I know we've disagreed about this in the past Stevie, but you need to accept that a lot of South Tynesiders feel that the Tyne part of that epithet counts for a lot in terms of their identity. It's not universal - I've never claimed that - but to suggest that South Tynesiders "naturally" feel aligned to Sunderland is insulting to a lot of people whether they actually follow NUFC or even have no interest in Football.

I'd also add that there are vast tracts of Newcastle and North Tyneside which are far bigger shitholes and more scum ridden than most of ST.

Hebburn is pretty much on the Tyne though.

And South Shields is further North than most of Newcastle.
