The average bloke on Tyneside was a working man in the 70's and 80's, many of them including my father, had times on the dole due to the construction industry being on its' arse, and old industries shutting down (for the long term good of the country imo). These people don't care about anything else, they're ingrained in the fact the Conservatives ruined the north and created a north south divide where the tories give to the rich and take from the poor. It's been passed down through generations to a very large amount of people who aren't politically minded enough to think for themselves, and will always display a "we've always voted Labour attitude". You know that's the truth, forgetting about the merits of the latest policies. It's even more true in Liverpool who are an even more insular siege mentality people than we are, fucking Socialist Labour getting votes over there True up to a point but there are just as many Tories in the south who even post-Blair are obsessed with "CND sympathising loonies" to quote LM and hark back to winter of discontent. What was the NE vote like before Thatcher though? Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression it was always staunch Labour. Just like Hertfordshire is staunch tory. That is a combination of the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. The question, therefore, is what terms will David Cameron offer and what will Nick Clegg accept. If they won EVERY seat remaining between them (which they won't) they could only muster a 6 seat majority. Other parties can be roped in...but that wouldn't be stable. Robinson is spot on. He needs to remember that a lot of Lib Dem voters are ex or fed up Labour voters who couldn't stomach voting Tory. Which I hope makes those who voted Liberal expecting "historic change" realise what they were actually voting for - the Tories. This is why I mistrust PR as I said earlier despite it seeming fairer - I'd speculate that most people who vote Liberal share more values with those who vote Labour than Tory so they have to accept that making the Liberals the power brokers can mean a Tory government. Of course that also seems fair in the light of them getting the most votes anyway but my irrational side still thinks its wrong. In the past I could see a place for a centrist party given how far apart the other two were so "non-extremists" could be comfortable voting Liberal. However now there's been a shift to the centre from both sides I don't really see a place for the liberals other than as being there to confuse things.
