Christmas Tree 4725
How naive of you. I suggest you re-read this thread and see how many times a woman who left office 20 years ago gets a mention. Scotland Tory free and the North East for about 20 years??? Wonder why? Cameron......Nope. The guy on the beeb this morning said that all the voters talk about in Scotland on the doorstep is Thatcher. Alex is right, they have all had a mare but it is the UK plc that will suffer. I think Thatcher is the most evil woman in history but I had no great personal problem with Hague, Duncan Smith or Howard (apart from them being Tories obviously). However Cameron has really triggered a base hatred switch which has nothing to do with him having the best chance of winning for a while. See I just don't see it with Cameron. I've seen many a Tory (and labour) mp that makes your skin crawl but Cameron I think is villified more for his background and upbringing than his political views. Having watched all sorts of politicians over the years I find him quite genuine in his beliefs. It will be interesting over the coming days to see which politicians are more desperate to be in power than keep their principals. Allready it seems every labour mp is on the TV shoring themselves to the lib dems. Going to be a very interesting few days. Happy Face 29
meh, anyone up here who says its not about thatcher is deluding themselves tbh. Must be galling that you like her so much yet she's still stopping the Tories getting in dont worry, the witch will be dead soon enough! And Cameron will take her place. As people were saying before the election, with the economic situation as it is, Cameron is going to fuck it up SO badly he'll make Maggie look like a happy memory. Must be galling that you like her so much yet she's still stopping the Tories getting in dont worry, the witch will be dead soon enough! I'm not worried. It's true though. If you look back to before her the Tories always had a lot of seats in Scotland. Look at it now. Ironic, given her belief in the union between the two countries that she's done more for the independence movement up there than anyone else. And while her influence lives on in many bad ways, I take comfort in the fact it seems to still be stopping her party gaining power. Swings and roundabout. spongebob toonpants 3997
As Nick Robinson has just said... There is only one potential stable majority available. That is a combination of the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. The question, therefore, is what terms will David Cameron offer and what will Nick Clegg accept. Oh, and one other thing, will their parties accept their proposals? http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/nickrobinson/20...otential_s.html Good old Nick Robinson; former President of the Oxford University Conservative Association, a member of the Bullingdon Club and chairman of the Young Conservatives. NJS 4386
He's right. The average bloke on Tyneside was a working man in the 70's and 80's, many of them including my father, had times on the dole due to the construction industry being on its' arse, and old industries shutting down (for the long term good of the country imo). These people don't care about anything else, they're ingrained in the fact the Conservatives ruined the north and created a north south divide where the tories give to the rich and take from the poor. It's been passed down through generations to a very large amount of people who aren't politically minded enough to think for themselves, and will always display a "we've always voted Labour attitude". You know that's the truth, forgetting about the merits of the latest policies. It's even more true in Liverpool who are an even more insular siege mentality people than we are, fucking Socialist Labour getting votes over there True up to a point but there are just as many Tories in the south who even post-Blair are obsessed with "CND sympathising loonies" to quote LM and hark back to winter of discontent. Compare the circumstances now with the election in 2005 and I think that's about as damning as it gets. I sort of agree he isn't hated, I think he's just been a complete nonenity throughout the campaign really. Edited May 7, 2010 by alex

Renton 21627
Its the mish mash result that basically hamstrings the country. An outright Labour or Tory win would have been better. Now it will all be about back room deals and jobs for the boys. If I was Cameron I would probably avoid any shady deals, let the Lib Lab pact have a go and then wait for the next general election in November. Lib Lab coalition wouldn't be big enough though. You should be gutted by last night. Given all the factors against Labour, the poor Lib Dem showing, and the media influence the tories have had in a bankrolled tory campaign, they've been unable to even get a majority. Cameron should resign imo. First of all, we should all be gutted because chaos will now rule regardless. The Sky political bloke saying how Labour got less votes this time than they did under Kinnock yet could still form a government. Think it all points to a quick change in the voting system. That would be a change the Conservative party alone has flatly rejected then? How ironic. You must admit this was a piss poor performance from the tories, given the circumstances. People don't like your man Cameron I'm afraid. I disagree, the truth is people dont like Thatcher. How utterly patronising of you CT. People don't like him, he comes across as a priviliged, PR orientated tosser with no convictions. Read this thread again if you don't believe me, and accept he has led the tories to failure. How naive of you. I suggest you re-read this thread and see how many times a woman who left office 20 years ago gets a mention. Scotland Tory free and the North East for about 20 years??? Wonder why? Alex is right, they have all had a mare but it is the UK plc that will suffer. 'A guy on the Beeb' ffs. I've reread a fair bit on this thread and although the past is obviously mentioned (Labour in the 1970s as well mind) - as it should be -, the main issue has been with the present leaders and their policies. Can anyone do a word count on 'Thatcher' and 'Cameron' to verify this I wonder because I'd stake money on it? You've probably mentioned Thatcher more than anyone as well. Regarding the NE vote, perhaps maybe that Cameron admitted he would target cuts at the NE may have had just a little bit of negative impact? That and the fact the area has always been a Labour stronghold of course, or had that fact passed you by? If the tories had had fair and sensible policies presented by a less smug and shallow man than Cameron, they would have won outright with their media backing (another thing you are discounting), simple as that. As for the inevitable rematch, I hope Brown does step down gracefully and with dignity, and the Conservatives keep Cameron. If this happens, I honestly think they'd lose outright. If they won EVERY seat remaining between them (which they won't) they could only muster a 6 seat majority. Other parties can be roped in...but that wouldn't be stable. Robinson is spot on.
