Personally if you keep these things trapped in a tank for years, sooner of later they will crack.

"Yeah the whale...like you know..It jumped...you know it was showcking..shaaaking...we didn't know what was going ahhn".

I said that I had zero sympathy with that Yank who was eaten by his pet tiger a couple of months ago and this is similar for me.

I know zoos/sea worlds have improved a bit in the last few years and I can see a case for them at some level but it still feels wrong and these incidents seem almost like "justice".

Shame on anyone who goes to places like that tbh. Incredibly cruel keeping them in conditions like that.

I always knew that conditions for animals in circuses were shit but thought zoos in general were "better" but I think what really turned me off was going to one about 25 years ago with my niece who was 5 or 6 at the time - it took the innocent questions like "why does that lion look so sad" to really wake me up. In fact I think she was so upset that we left early.

Places like Monkey World are a bit different but these places where animals are used for "entertainment" are fucking immoral imo.

Was going to make a comment about not being able to tell if a lion looks happy or sad but a quick google proves five year olds know best

I think some zoos do a lot of good work but with places like Sea World it's just cruel. Keeping an orca in a tank that size is like expecting a person never to leave their bedroom.

I think they have changed - a lot of work has gone into species preservation and "enrichment" as they describe it which is worthwhile and I'd rather see animals in places like Longleat than in the old "cages" type of zoos.

Having said that the "sea world" concept seems fundamentally wrong - despite the education angle - sea creatures like whales need somplete freedom imo.

I was in Florida last year for a [step]family holiday and we went to Sea World one of the days.

What struck me as interesting was at the killer whale show. Right before the whales were due to perform, the head trainer called them all around to where he was standing backstage. One of the bigger whales appeared to shake its head, swum away prompting all the whales to follow suit.

The next 15 minutes some poor sod in a wetsuit had to bullshit to the crowd because the whales had told them to fuck off.

One of my great "hopes" is that the more intelligent animals like Dolphins (which includes Orcas), Chimps, Elephants etc turn out to be a lot more intelligent than we think now - even approaching our level but just not being as nasty.

I guess the existing orcas couldn't be freed now, it would be ridiculous to think that any are still captured and 'tamed' for entertainment purposes. I've seen dolphins perform in Tenerife and Baltimore, didn't think much about it at the time but in retrospect maybe I should have.

Be careful what you wish for, haven't you seen that episode of The Simpsons where the super-intelligent dolphins take over the world?

They'd jumped the shark by then though.

;)

That episode must be at least ten years old. They were still okay back then weren't they? When did it actually jump?
