ChezGiven 0
Argentina's military capability is comprised of 30,000 gay hats with feathers in them, a tight fitting uniforms, a large flag and some trumpets. We'll be fine.

Bombadil 0
I think there's still a strong UK military / naval presence down there. Richard Dannett was on the radio this morning saying that we have a stronger military presence now than we did at the start of the 82 conflict. Thing is, what IS the Argie's military capability these days? I mean if they're having finacial problems have they been maintaining their military? I know our forces have been decreased to a ridiculous state but if we didn't stop them should they invade we'd be even more of a laughing stock in the world's view than we already are. ... and would it affect us having Jonas and Colo? Hmmm... pretty much the same as the last time but no big ships - cruisers or aircraft carriers last time most Argies stayed on here TBH - it wasn't personal Wouldn't Britain have the same problem though? In 1982, the British forces depended greatly on the two aircraft carriers because obviously the Falklands are so close to the mainland where the entire Argentine air force is based. I'm not sure Britain could even get two carriers down there in time now.
Anth 113
Are any South American countries friendly with Russia? (In Particular Chavez in Venezualla??) Arent they Commies / socialists? Basically I'm asking if this could spark off a larger conflict???
Guest alex
Well, they're in OPEC so they'll probably just rustle up a few suicide bombers to hit the UK mainland
LeazesMag 0
I see they are getting a bit hot and bothered now that there may be oil down there (And it looks like they are getting the backing of all South America). Have we still got the capability to defend them if needs be? Were Argentina around when we claimed them in 1833? No chance. There has always been oil. LeazesMag 0
There was always two sides to the war in 82 - the election campaign and the minerals/oil which is now coming to fruition. It would be good if the "Continental shelf" basis for claiming territory was ratified globally though - would the French claim the UK? It was nothing to do with a forthcoming election. She got lucky in the aftermath, but it was because they invaded, pure and simple.
LeazesMag 0
I must admit being 1 in 82 means I'm not excatly the most knowledgeable when it comes to what happened and what not, I'm just interested to see how Argentina claim to have some sort of sovereignty over them. Did they have presence there when we claimed them? I think similarly back then it was a military junta starting a war to save their own skin / raise their popularity. Ironically they did just that for Thatcher. I'm not sure what their claim is though beyond it being relatively close to them. Anyway, if there's oil there, can't the locals just get Blackwater or someone like that to look after their interests? spot on

ChezGiven 0
And because the people of the islands consider themselves British and wanted protection from the Argies. The Falklands are like our own little south atlantic corner shop; a nice little earner, well established in the community but the owners are clearly 'not from round 'ere'. NJS 4375
It was nothing to do with a forthcoming election. She got lucky in the aftermath, but it was because they invaded, pure and simple. She deliberately withdrew the Endurance/Endeavour (can't remember which) to send a nice little hint. In 78 they sabre rattled and Callahan sent a nuke sub and they backed down straight away. Whatever the cunt was, she was an opportunist who saw the chance. No doubt we'll get ultra-patriitoic bollocks in this thread about how it was oh so glorious. The bitch deliberately broke her rules of engagement to avoid having to sign the american peace deal and so she could "rejoice" in war.

Whatever you think of her [Thatcher], fact is that the junta were the ones with an election in mind, to deflect the Argie population away from rocketing inflation and a failing economy, and saw the Falklands as a prize to win them votes. We had no choice but to defend them. The Labour party throughout the 1970's presided over massive defence cuts by the way.

I remember her "Rejoice at that news" (on victory) - I also remember the flag waving on the way out and the way back - theres no shame in pointing out how war has always been glorified in this country and that one was particularly so. The Labour party throughout the 1970's presided over massive defence cuts by the way. Good - complete waste of money as I've said previously. Surely the whole point of a military junta is that you don't need to worry about elections They were concerned with their popularity (or lack of it) though. They only lasted another year after the war.

Interesting you put so much on perception of being British counting for so much - does that apply to Muslims as well then? I've said before that all the military campaigns since WWII have been bollocks - sorry for not being blinded by the flag.

Erm.......most people especially those with family and friends in the Forces would have been pleased that we actually won....same goes for any other war in fact. You should have been a member of CND back in the 1970's etc, friends of Soviet Russia and buying books from Colletts Where you think we would be without our Armed Forces.......you really think everybody in the world is, errr, civilised and fair Edited February 23, 2010 by LeazesMag
