I tried installing Firefox, but found it messed up my settings so I uninstalled it. I also tried IE7 and it did the same. I need to upgrade soon as IE6 is being phased out. Why does this always mess up my settings so I can't connect ? I run a googlemail account through IE6 for business type mail rather than personal mail, is this the problem ? Would I have to change my pop3 settings etc back to freeserve/orange and then configure google settings altogether, or should I just forget about using emails through outlook completely. Reading on, if you're accessing these via outlook, using aPOP3 account, your browser still has no baring on the set up. What settings exactly get messed up? If you add a new browser all it should do is import favourites etc, its got nothing to do with how you connect to the web. That would be under control panel and network connections or something? If you add a new browser all it should do is import favourites etc, its got nothing to do with how you connect to the web. That would be under control panel and network connections or something? it is because sites such as you tube are saying they will stop support for IE6. Daughter also says her facebook would work better. I don't want to fix something that is working. I tried firefox about a year ago and can't quite remember what it messed up but if you are sure of the above I may try it again. Would you use firefox to actually connect to the internet, would you tube and facebook work better if I stayed with IE6 and used firefox alongside it ? Until now, developers have had a responsibility to ensure that their sites work on IE6. Now that MS have withdrawn support, developers are no longer obliged to support IE6 - they'll ply the line of "it's an unsupported browser - you must upgrade". Youtube is just the first website to withdraw development - Google Maps have done the same and also Wikipedia struggles (certainly from within a proxy environment). Other sites will follow so in the long run, it's better to change browsers now. The beauty about going to Firefox is that you can run it in tandem with IE6. If you upgrade to IE7 or IE8, you lose IE6. As JawD advises, the reason your POP mail account is not working is not an issue with the browser per se - it's just that you haven't found the correct settings yet. I should imagine googling "Firefox Google Mail POP settings" would set you on the right path and with IE6 still installed, you'll be able to access it still whilst you're getting Firefox up to speed. Upgrading to IE7 also messed up my settings, when I tried that in the past. I had to restore IE6 which was a hell of a bother too. I can do without the googlemail account through IE6 if I have to, I only do that because the initial settings are my original freeserve setup ones from years ago and use yahoo now for private email. Would a setup like this connect to the internet using IE6 and then I switch browsers to firefox to get these sites working better. Don't be fooled by that one Leazes - sure you can mask your IP address when it comes to forums such as this but it's just as easy to find out what someone's true identity is anyway. Don't be fooled by that one Leazes - sure you can mask your IP address when it comes to forums such as this but it's just as easy to find out what someone's true identity is anyway. haha, you know why I asked, wouldn't mind a 3rd one just to beat their "system" Back on topic.....i saw this googlechrome, I don't mind what I use so long as it works and doesn't mess anything up that can't be easily put right. Nah. On your email. Am I right in saying that you're using webmail (gmail / googlemail in this case) and forwarding it on to your regular mail software (like outlook) ? So, whether you change to Firefox or chrome or safari, it doesnt matter, thats just the window you look at the web world with You mail client (outlook) just needs the settings from your webmail (google) to run. I think. ta mate, I'll have a look at this tomorrow. This looks like how I have configured my OE though which has been fine for a couple of years.
