Bully in No. 10

If you aren't thick skinned enough to take a bit of a dressing down, you shouldn't really be working at the highest levels of government.

The hammering they're giving Brown day in and day out could kick them in the arse when it gets so bad as to win him the sympathy of the public.

I'm no fan of his, but I'd love to see him tell them to fuck off. He's fucked up enough important things, we shouldn't really be concentrating on some flunky who couldn't take the heat.

Agree with this.

I don't want to trivialise bullying as such, but adults ringing a fucking helpline is pathetic imo.

Fully warrants a kick in the minge tbh.

His behaviour was bad enough that the head of the civil service had to give him a warning about it. Imagine how shitty his behaviour must have been to warrant that response, not exactly something done lightly. I've seen bullying in high pressure/stressful situations and no matter how funny the thick of it looks, i reckon the fact that someone has worked hard enough to get to a position in the heart of government, they deserve respect, not disdain.

I think this shows him up as the charmless cunt that he is. I'm a demanding boss and make people work hard but i'd never be disrespectful.

Depends what they are used to though Chez - I'd imaginme that civil servants at that level would have a pretty priviledged background and may not be "streetwise" - maybe they'd just see being called an idiot as abuse.

I'm not saying that would be okay for a "manager" to do but its a long way from some kind of mental torture.

He's never physically threatened or hurt anyone. Nothing wrong with firing things about the room and giving staff the odd bollocking, preferable to a Major type character.

Shouting and screaming to get people to do what you want is, for me, a direct subsitute for charm, charisma and the powers of persuasion (i'm not saying i have any of those btw).

Our Prime Minister should be all that, Brown may have had the ambition and the desire for the top job but for me is the perfect example of the Peter Principle. This principle states that everyone is promoted to their level of incompetence. Brown was a good chancellor but not Prime Minister material.

Good HR development people will tell you that everyone needs to understand that there is a ceiling above which you should not rise. Not everyone CAN be the CEO of a company, very few have the requisite characteristics. The problem in politics is that there is no HR department to assess personal ability for the top role.

Sorry Chez but he wasn't.

Agree with everything thing else tho...

The criticism of his charm deficit may well be justified, but it doesn't automatically follow that the employees claims are proven. Lets say PM is the most pressured job in the country, so those around the PM should be proportionally able to deal with pressure/flak. Civil servants are notoriously delicate flowers; sounds like a few have been promoted beyond their competence along with Brown if the Peter Principle is to be believed.

I'm not saying that he's the perfect PM, I think his lack of soft skills is obvious to everyone. But the civil servants working around him shouldn't be so fucking precious to start complaining when someone starts throwing the odd can of coke around.

On further reading, the woman who leaked the stuff from the charity has connections to the Tory party, so there may be a bit more to this than meets the eye.

She was on the radio this morning (5 live). She was embarassingly bad, worse than the homeopathic GP who was on before her. Fully grown adults phoning a bully line? FFS. :(

The political knives are out for Brown no matter what he does. It's getting to the stage now though where it might backfire and he'll get some sympathy votes. I hope so.

There appears to be a lot more than meets the eye:
