Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Just had a phone call from a mate whose daughter has got a virus on her laptop. She has Mcafee on it but the subscription had lapsed. She opened something on MSN and thinks that is how she got the virus. She has since re-subscribed and ran a scan. It found 1 virus and she tried to delete it. on restarting the laptop and rescanning the virus was still there. Any suggestions?
Craig 6700
Any idea what virus it is?
Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Sorry Craig, no idea. That was as much info as I could get over the phone. My mate is totally in the dark when it comes to computers. Would doing a virus scan in safe mode help?
Craig 6700
Quite possibly but really need to find out what the precise virus is as they all are dealt with different. Symantec have a 'virus dictionary' somewhere on their site detailing exactly what you need to do to get rid. Trouble is that, with experience, I've learned that you'll never truly dis-infect a machine - best thing in the long run is re-format.

Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Thanks Craig, I've put that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on a memory stick. I'll take it round tomo, see if it does the trick.
Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Malwarebytes didn't find anything after a full scan, but the virus is still there. A browse around some anti virus forums suggested trying onecare live safety scan and Dr Web cure it, so I'm going to suggest trying those next. EDIT: apparently McAfee can quarantine it, but not delete it?? Edited February 21, 2010 by Dr Kenneth Noisewater
