Craig 6700
A man has been arrested after a Blackburn Rovers fan was found unconscious with a head injury during a game at Stoke City. The man is critical at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. At just after 1600 GMT police were alerted to an incident in a concourse in a stand which houses Blackburn fans. It is believed the injured man, thought to be in his late 20s, was hit on the head with a bin. A 25-year-old man has been arrested. The injured man was initially treated at the scene for a head injury and cardiac arrest by staff from West Midlands Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance, police said. He was resuscitated at the scene and then taken to hospital. Officers and club stewards were alerted to the incident in the concourse area of the south stand at the stadium. Staffordshire Police said officers were carrying out an investigation after the man was found collapsed just after the half-time interval. Earlier Ch Insp Adrian Roberts, match commander at the game which saw Stoke beat Blackburn 3-0, said there were just over 1,300 Blackburn fans at the game, and confirmed no Stoke fans were involved. He said officers were speaking to witnesses and examining CCTV to find out what had happened. West Midlands Ambulance Service said they were called to a medical emergency at the Britannia Stadium just before 1620 GMT. A spokesman said staff from the ambulance service and St John Ambulance were already on site providing medical cover for the game. A statement on the Blackburn Rovers website said a man was in a critical condition following the game. It said: "The man was among a 1,300-strong Rovers following in the South Stand, occupied by visiting supporters." A statement on Stoke City's website said police were investigating the incident "which has left a Blackburn Rovers supporter in a critical condition in hospital". It said Ch Insp Roberts confirmed the man suffered a "head trauma" in the incident which was confined to the visitors' section of the SEAT stand. The statement said: "No further comment at this time will be made by the club as this is a matter being handled by the police." Craig 6700
Sounds like it was down to Blackburn fans. Must admit my first thought was the Stoke fans were back to their worst....
peasepud 59
Its fucking mental, so you can go to the game, sit in your own end surrounded by your own fans and still die because some arsehole thinks its a good idea to lob something. absolute lunacy. Hopefully, the bloke will be done for murder, not manslaughter and anyone who is identified from CCTV as being involved ie egging the fucker on etc should be done as accessories. Craig 6700
I'm still at a loss as to where he got hold of a bin.... and how the fuck he actually got it up the stairs into the seating area without either a steward or the old bill stopping him! peasepud 59
Chatter on Blackburn forums is that a few were pissing around at half time in the concourse, someone threw the bin up in the air and he deliberately went and headed it. Not sure how true but this is coming from eye witnesses. Okay I was one of the witnesses and have given my evidence to the police already. The lad was on our coach to the game, and had been a number of times before. I don't know what to say on here, just that I couldn't get to him in time. The paramedics were quick to take over just as we'd got him on his back and were starting CPR, I'd tried to stop the bleeding with my jacket and another lady was helping him before me she tried her best also. The paramedics were working on him for a while whilst I was there. Nobody attacked him, another guy at the station filmed it all on his phone, he said that the lad had tried to header the bin. Well very sad he's died, you don't like here about anyone dying. Very idiotic thing to do if that is 100% true, what a heed the baal.
NJS 4411
If the latter stuff is true, I don't get why the lad has been nicked if it was a stupid tragedy though - it would be harsh if he threw the bin in the air and the lad ran under it.
